Roanoke Stormwater Together, we can create a Clean Water Legacy. Only rain down the drain. 🌊🌷

To learn more about us and what we do: www.roanokeva.gov/500/stormwater

The Stormwater Utility was created to address water quality in the City of Roanoke. The city is mandated via federal and state agencies to control and eliminate stormwater pollution. Like many rivers across the country, the health of the Roanoke River is impaired from pollution. Stormwater runoff contributes to this pollution from normal activities taking place around the city. Everyday activities such as walking the dog, fertilizing the lawn, driving cars and exposing bare soil can generate pollution. These pollutants wash into the storm drain system and flow untreated into the nearest creek, ultimately reaching the Roanoke River. The resulting pollution reduces our community's ability to use our waterways for swimming, fishing, and drinking, and it adversely impacts wildlife populations. These problems create negative impacts on our community by reducing livability, suppressing the local economy, and increasing the cost of using our water as a natural resource. It is our goal to work together with citizens to improve the City of Roanoke's waterways so that they can be community assets for many years to come. Important Notices:

Staff from across the City including Transportation, Stormwater, Parks and Recreation, Facilities, Fleet, and Solid Waste are hard at work preparing for the snow season. Over 160 staff are involved with snow removal from operating plows, shoveling sidewalks, and repairing equipment ❄️

Becoming a snow fighter is an important task and training starts early before any winter weather. Staff spend a full day kicking off training with snow training at the Berglund Center to get prepared to keep our streets safe in winter weather 🌨️

A big thank you to all of our staff who work long hours and learn new skills outside their day to day to keep the City functioning in winter weather!

Prepare and protect yourself, your family, and your community from flooding and its impacts 🌧️

Disasters don’t plan, but you can! Here's some additional information about preparing for possible flooding in anticipation of heavy rain from Hurricane Isaias. You can find recommendations on what to do before a flood, during a flood, and after a flood, as well as a list of flood prone roads within the City of Roanoke.

Remember, if you come across flooded roads, turn around, don't drown 🌊

Turn around. Don’t drown. Do not walk, bike, or drive through floodwaters. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and a foot of water will float many vehicles and can even carry away SUVs and pick-up trucks.

🌧️Anywhere it rains, it can flood. Sign up for Star City Alerts today to be alerted about local emergencies: https://www.roanokeva.gov/2788/Star-City-Alerts

Our team is making progress on improvements to the Reserve Ave Training Wall in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Unlike a traditional retaining wall, a training wall is designed to guide and control water flow while withstanding the strong force of flood waters. Our work will reinforce the wall to help manage flooding for years to come 🌊

We are proud to be part of this important infrastructure and environmental project! Updates to the training wall are anticipated to be complete in early 2027.

The Clyde and Dunkirk Ave. NE Storm Drain Improvement Project has begun! 🚧

The project will include installing 385 feet of storm drain pipe, 6 new storm drain inlets, 3 manholes, and 800 feet of curbing in the vicinity of the Dunkirk Ave. NE and Clyde Ave. NE intersection. The goal of the project is to improve roadway safety by efficiently capturing stormwater runoff from the steep side streets and adjacent land that drain towards this intersection while also reducing flood risk to several properties in the area.

The project is anticipated to be complete by summer 2027. While efforts will be made to minimize disruption to neighborhood traffic, the community has been advised to be mindful of work zones and heavy equipment during construction.

As we officially move from summer into fall, let’s recap this summer’s storms and rainfall across the City of Roanoke🌧️

Since rain gauge installation in 2018, summer rainfall has varied from year to year, with an average of 11.5 inches. This summer (June 21 through September 21) the City received an average of 10.0 inches of rain, slightly below the summer average.

July was the wettest month, with 5.5 inches of rain, more than double the rainfall recorded in June, August, or September. Rainfall also varied across the City, with Garden City Elementary School accumulating the most at 14.9 inches and Hidden Valley Middle School accumulating the least at 7.5 inches☔️

As of September 22, the U.S. Drought Monitor classified the City of Roanoke as being in moderate drought. The summer began with the City classified as being in severe drought. While this summer brought some strong storms, rainfall totals can vary considerably across the City, and short term rain does not eliminate long term dry conditions☀️

We used the City’s Stream Hydrology and Rainfall Knowledge System (SHARKS) to access data from nine rain gauges located throughout the City. Want to see how much it has rained near you or check stream and flooding conditions? Explore SHARKS: https://bigbadcrad.shinyapps.io/RoanokeSHARKS/
