🔥 THERMAL IMAGING CAMERAS 🔥

During recent department training, RTFD personnel worked with our thermal imaging cameras to increase proficiency and familiarity. A thermal imaging camera (TIC) allows firefighters to see differences in temperature, even when smoke or darkness makes normal visibility nearly impossible. During an emergency, they are used to help locate victims, identify the location of a fire, find hidden fire, and recognize changing conditions.

It can also identify heat where we might not expect it, inside walls, ceilings, electrical components, or other areas that could create additional hazards or lead to a fire rekindling after crews leave.

TICs are valuable tools that allow firefighters to detect differences in heat signatures, even in conditions with little to no visibility. These cameras help identify hidden fire conditions, locate heat within walls and other objects, and better understand fire behavior when smoke or darkness limits what can be seen.

Beyond firefighting, TICs play an important role in search and rescue operations, hazardous materials incidents, and locating hidden heat sources.

While this technology does not replace traditional firefighting skills, it provides our personnel with critical information to make safer, faster, and more informed decisions on the emergency scene.

Continued training with the tools and technology available to us helps ensure our firefighters are fully prepared.
