Study Abroad Isn't Just for Universities!
Ventura College sent 11 Students to Loreto, Mexico in our first study abroad program. The Spring Break trip was made possible through a collaboration with the Ventura Sister City
Association and local nonprofit Eco-Alianza de Loreto. Students were immersed in Loreto's culture, history, and natural environment and visited historic missions. They also snorkeled in a marine sanctuary, explored the Sierra de la Giganta desert, and compared island biodiversity between Loreto's Coronado Island and Ventura's own Santa Cruz Island. They gave back to the community through beach cleanup, visits with foster children, and by supporting local businesses. The cross-disciplinary program wove together coursework from Intro to Sociology and Field Biology, helping students see firsthand how community and environment are deeply connected. Thank you to Sociology Professor Daniella Graves and Biology Professor Kammy Algiers for going with the students! Both professors hope to make the trip an annual tradition.
