Happy Feast of St. Joseph the Worker!
Why is this an important day to celebrate and live out?
The Catholic Church established the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker in 1955 under Pope Pius XII as a deliberate response to the rise of communism and its view of the human person as merely a unit of labor within the state. By honoring Saint Joseph—a humble carpenter—with a second feast day, the Church affirmed a radically different vision: work is not imposed by the state but chosen by the individual, flowing from human dignity and free will.
This feast underscores that every person has a right to meaningful work that sustains both family and soul. Workers are not utilitarian tools of production, but persons made for a higher purpose. Authentic workers’ rights are rooted not in coercion or class struggle, but in justice, responsibility, and the freedom to create, build, and provide.
The effort to honor Saint Joseph as the Worker implicitly affirms an economic order that respects human initiative where creativity and enterprise are encouraged, and families flourish through honest labor.
Capitalism, where private ownership of capital; investment driven by individual decision; and compensation, prices, and production shaped by competition in a free market remains the most effective and proven economic system for advancing human prosperity and dignity.
As socialist ideas spread in America, this message remains timely and emphasizes the importance of upholding the dignity of work, safeguarding the freedom to labor and innovate, and ensure economic systems serve the person to empower individuals to pursue opportunity, build businesses, and realize their God-given potential.
Let's help bring about a more limited and efficient government here in Bexar County this year on November 3.
Bexar County officials chose which private businesses were essential or not and mandated closure of the "non-essential" businesses during the COVID Pandemic, misused the majority of $389 million ARPA funds to enlarge government, and expanded county debt. It's time to reign in our local government and never allow ideologically driven politicians to shut down private businesses carte blanche.
St. Joseph, pray for us, please.
