Happy Earth Day from the San Diego Coast District. ๐ŸŒŽ

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is shaped by unique geology, and Red Butte is one of its most recognizable features.

In this video, Torrey Pines Docent Mukesh highlights the contact between the Torrey Sandstone below and the overlying Linda Vista Formation.

That reddish color you see comes from iron in the rock. Think of a rusty bike sitting outside, over time, iron reacts and leaves that same reddish color behind.

Here, that iron has precipitated within the formation, helping create a hard layer that stands out along the cliffs. Using a magnet, you can even see the iron content for yourself.

Thereโ€™s more to these iconic cliffs than meets the eye.

Happy

Ever camped at San Elijo, taken a long walk at Cardiff, or surfed at Seaside?

Youโ€™ve spent time in Swamiโ€™s Marine Protected Area.

This 13.2 square mile stretch of protected ocean along our coast helps marine life thrive, supporting biodiversity, rebuilding fish populations, and keeping ecosystems healthy for generations to come.
