In today's installment of Mystery Monday we present you this. Another one of the metal detecting finds from the growing cache of some of our youth volunteers. This one is interesting because of the writing on it. I believe I see the word "patented." As you can see from the zoomed out picture, it is rather small. That screw head near it is standard deck screw size. We need your help, it might be a long shot, but do you know what this little oxidized piece of history is? Or what the bottom writing says? Thank you!

In today's installment of Wildlife Wednesday we present you a wonderful partnership culminating in the release of 3 more Florida box turtles into the wild. These lucky ones (2 males 1 female), like many others, found themselves in the care of the Wildlife Center Of Southwest Florida. There are several ways they end up there, illness, injuries and displacement. After seeing a veterinarian and recovering, if they are able to survive in the wild, they'll be released.

It's always ideal to release in the area that an animal is found. Unfortunately that's not always possible. The habitat may have been destroyed for development, dangerous, or have pets that could reinjure. In cases like these, they come to Crowley Museum & Nature Center where they will always be safely away from development and traffic. Thank you so much to Ms Kathy, the dedicated volunteer that donates her time and love to helping wildlife, she brought these cuties home to us. We are happy and honored to be trusted partners in saving wildlife.

The weather has really taken a change for the better! Its perfect for property maintenance and repairs. On days like today I'm extra grateful for volunteers who help with me with these ongoing chores. Like Mr Tom & Mrs Linda who do a lot of vegetation control, especially on the boardwalk, Mrs Karen & Mr Billy who have been cleaning up storm season debris and Mr Roy holding down repairs.

Today I worked on pig pen projects..... you can see the assistance they offer.... or these goofy goats.... or lazy cows..... 191.5 acres is a lot of land. As you can see from these pictures, good help is hard to find.

This post is just a little Throwback Thursday shout out of gratitude. Friends... this volunteer father/daughter duo, Mr Pete & Ms Colleen Egan are just amazing. They've been slowly and painstakingly going through the collections of historical items, identifying, researching, servicing and displaying them. They've created so many guides, informative signs and new displays that have added a wealth of new knowledge to the CMNC cultural history immersive experience. They are full of good and productive ideas for the entire non profit and we are so grateful! Our volunteers are our lifeblood. If you see a CMNC volunteer when you visit, thank them! If youre interested in volunteering please reach out. We have something for everyone!

In today's installment of Wildlife Wednesday, we would like to share this release of rehabilitated mourning doves (Zenaida macroua). These 2 birds were rehabilitated by Save Our Seabirds until they were determined to be fit for release back into the wild. Their rescue/pick up volunteer, Mr Xavier, used his day off to bring them out for release at their new home, Crowley Museum & Nature Center . This species of bird is one of the most broadly spread and abundant species in all of North America. Places like Save Our Seabirds save sometimes hundreds of these little guys per year. Doves are notorious for building poor quality nests in dangerous areas. As a result, nests often fall. When nestlings can't be returned to the nest, rehabilitation is needed. A dove's diet is almost entirely seeds, with some bits of plant material. Adult birds regurgitate a mixture of what they've eaten from their crops and the chicks eat this from their mouths and throat. In captivity, babies are often fed a special mixture via tube, or in a way that mimics eating from parent. To avoid aspiration (inhaling into lungs) a person who finds such a nestling should never attempt to give any food or water of any kind to misplaced baby wildlife, including doves. We wish these 2 good luck!
