We were proud to honor Molly Murphy, School Counselor at Cicero Elementary School, with our 2026 Children’s Guardian Award. For many years, Molly has partnered with us to bring our High Five! K–2 and High Five! 3–5 programs to students, helping equip them with the tools they need to stay safe.

When a child speaks about abuse, it's important to try to remain calm and be supportive. Here are some practical tips and reminders for when a child discloses abuse.

Remember, react responsibly; children are testing the waters by watching your reactions. Be very mindful of your facial expressions and other body language. They are trying to make sure it is safe to tell their story. Next, don't make false promises. Adults can make the mistake of promising that the child will not see the perpetrator. However, they may have to see them again in court. Another helpful tip is to allow for silence. It's important to give them space because the child may be struggling to think or recall. Most importantly, praise them and thank them for sharing their story. A child's courage and resilience should be recognized!

McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center was honored to join the City of Syracuse for the Gun Violence Awareness Month flag-raising ceremony at City Hall. Together with community leaders, advocates, and partners, we stand united in our commitment to healing and prevention.

Through our partnership with the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office, our Mobile Support Unit continues to bring care directly into neighborhoods impacted by violence. The Unit provides emotional and psychological support, along with prevention-focused education for youth and young adults ages 12–25.

When communities experience trauma, we show up—not as law enforcement, but as a safe, compassionate presence dedicated to healing and restoring peace. Together, we are mobilizing care and strengthening the fabric of our Syracuse community. 💙

We were honored to welcome the U.S. Attorney’s Office yesterday! Their team organized a Freedom 250 donation drive and generously chose to support our center. 💙

Their donations included blankets, games, and snacks to help bring comfort and care to the children and families we serve.
