We will remember Dolores Huerta differently. From the first time we met her, to the words she shared and what she helped us believe.

What will stay with me is how she was always very generous with her time, often staying long after events concluded to connect with people when she visited Ventura County. She opened doors, seats, and conversations for women, farm workers and young people to be a part of decisions including the importance of voting and organizing around the issues and values close to us. She would often rally by saying, “Who has the power?…We got the power!….What kind of power? …People Power!” This is how I will remember her.

Dolores Huerta will forever be an icon, and a force we were fortunate to meet in our lifetime.

🎒 Do you have your emergency kit ready?

You may think building a well-stocked emergency kit is difficult or expensive, but it doesn’t need to be. You can gather supplies over time, starting with items you may already have at home like canned food and first aid supplies. Your kit should include the essentials you and your family might need, so you don’t need to scramble in an emergency.

It’s important to pack enough food, water and medicine for at least three days. Check with your local emergency management agency to find out if they have recommendations for your area.

Don’t forget items, such as:
- Flashlights and extra batteries.
- First aid kit.
- Local maps.
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio.
- NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert.
- Whistle to signal for help.
- Personal hygiene items.
- Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air).
- Plastic sheeting, scissors and duct tape (to shelter in place).
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation).
- Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities).
- Manual can opener (for food).

Today we remember and honor the courage and sacrifice of service members who never returned home.
To their families, we owe much gratitude for the loss they endured as they too made an incredible sacrifice.
Thank you to the City of Port Hueneme and City of Oxnard for organizing today’s ceremonies.
