I join the people of Weslaco and the Weslaco Fire Department as they mourn the tragic loss of firefighters, Johnny Peña and Julia Rocha.

Their dedication, courage, and unwavering commitment to serving and protecting South Texans will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with their families, the entire Weslaco Fire Department, and all those who knew them.

Texas ranks second in the nation for elder fraud complaints, with senior citizens filing more than 62,000 complaints in just one year and reporting over $1.3 billion in financial losses.

That is why I joined the members of the Golden Palms Rehabilitation and Retirement community in Harlingen to raise awareness and share tools on how to recognize scams and protect their personal information. Knowing the signs can prevent a devastating loss of folks' hard-earned money!

After the devastating March 2025 floods, I asked our South Texas communities what needed to be done to mitigate flooding and improve drainage in the region. After hearing their concerns, I got straight to work and have since delivered millions in direct federal funding to strengthen our resilience to extreme weather, including a $1 million investment for the City of La Feria to install a new storm sewer pump station in the La Bonita neighborhood.

The bottom line is simple: when local and federal partners work together, we can solve real problems and move South Texas forward!

Hit hard by labor shortages and rising fuel costs driven by the illegal war in Iran, Texas Gulf Coast shrimpers are fighting to survive and must now harvest nearly three times their typical amount just to cover fuel costs.

The Administration knows its caused harm to working families who keep our country fed. That's why they've promised one-time relief payments to American farmers and fishermen. I'm urging USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins to ensure South Texas shrimpers are included, and get money back in their pockets.

Across South Texas, senior citizens are struggling to afford housing, medicine, groceries and other daily essentials due to rising costs under this Administration. After a life of hard work, they should not be worried about making ends meet, let alone about scammers targeting their hard-earned savings.

Today, the Cameron County District Attorney's Office and Sheriff Manuel Treviño joined me in empowering members of the Golden Palms Rehabilitation and Retirement community with the tools and resources to secure savings and expose financial fraud!
