Ruth's Place

Directions Website

Ruth’s Place, a program of Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania, is an emergency shelter for women.

Ruth’s Place is the only emergency shelter dedicated to serving women experiencing homelessness in Luzerne County. Ruth’s Place provides both lodging and services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in an environment where women feel safe, supported and encouraged. Using evidence-based practices, the program provides temporary and short-term emergency shelter while coordinating with community partners to address our guests’ basic physical, financial, health, emotional and spiritual needs. Our dedicated staff assists our guests in forming and following a permanent housing plan to quickly achieve stable, long-term housing.

WE DID IT! 🎉 Together we raised over $25,700 to support Volunteers of America of Pennsylvania's Ruth's Place, the only 24/7 emergency shelter for women in Luzerne County. Thank you for walking in our shoes with us. The day was made special by all who attended and our wonderful sponsors (see the comments for details)! Stay tuned for more photos from the special day! 📸

In honor of Su***de Prevention month, the Ruth's Place Community Health Program created a "Hope Jar"💕. This displayed the number for the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline, and included little notes where women were able to write an encouraging message to those who might be having a difficult day. Those who were in need of support and connection were encouraged to take a note written by staff and their fellow residents. We'd like to highlight some of our favorites that were written throughout the month.

"You go further in life when it's a 'we' vs an 'I'"
"Keep going- your future self is cheering for you"
"Sometimes it doesn't happen 2 us, it happens 4 us"
"You are made for greatness, to do good, and live positively"
"Stand in your truth, even if your voice shakes"

We are so grateful for the continued support of the Mountaintop Christian Community Church. The women of Ruth's Place always look forward to their donation of purses, personal hygiene, clothing, and food. This in combination with the spiritual and emotional support they offer the women serves as a much needed "pick me up" on their most difficult days 🩷
