Polystyrene foam, better known as Styrofoam ™, should not be put in your curbside recycling bin!
We know it’s very confusing. You probably wonder why things that you think should be recyclable are not recyclable in your curbside bin? What gives?
The short answer is: There is no end-user locally to take foam for recycling purposes, so York County residents cannot put foam in their recycling bin. The ultimate goal of recycling is to “close the loop” by not just accepting the materials we put in the bin, but to make sure a new product can be made with them.
There are, however, a few places that will take this material for recycling. York County recycling business CRDC accepts all types of plastic, including foam, at their drop-off locations. For more information visit www.crdcmaterials.com. Foam can also be recycled at several companies close to York County.
