Traditional black or white agricultural netting relies entirely on physical exclusion, requiring small mesh sizes that choke greenhouse airflow.
However, groundbreaking joint research by the Kyoto Prefectural Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Center and the University of Tokyo reveals that switching to red nets introduces an effective "optical pest control" method that can cut insecticide applications by 25% to 50%.
The study, published in Scientific Reports, tested the defense mechanism on onion thrips (Thrips tabaci)—a highly destructive, chemical-resistant pest that devastates global crops like Kujo leeks.
Biologically, most insects lack red photoreceptors in their eyes, making it difficult for them to see the color red.
Curiously, the researchers discovered that the longer light wavelengths reflected by the red fibers stimulate other specialized visual receptors in the pests' eyes, acting as an optical illusion or behavioral deterrent that signals them to keep away.
Because this defense relies on color perception rather than an airtight physical blockage, red netting can utilize a mesh size significantly larger than the insects' actual bodies while still outperforming smaller black or white nets.
This structural shift offers massive functional perks: the larger holes dramatically improve greenhouse breathability, lower indoor working temperatures for farmers, maximize sunlight pe*******on, and reduce the internal humidity levels that breed devastating fungal infections.
By swapping traditional colors for red, growers gain a highly durable, reusable asset that lowers intense manual labor, cuts their chemical footprint, and builds a sustainable shield against a growing crisis of insecticide resistance.

The Department of Conservation has released draft Climate Bond Guidelines for the Regional Forest and Fire Capacity (RFFC) Program and is accepting public comment through July 21, 2026.
The draft guidelines outline how Climate Bond funding may be administered through the RFFC Program and will help inform future program implementation.
