This year marks 30 years of EUโSouth Africa Science & Technology Cooperation. Since the signature of our bilateral agreement in 1996, this partnership has become a cornerstone of AfricaโEurope cooperation.
South Africa is the EUโs leading research and innovation partner in Africa. Together, we are advancing knowledge and developing solutions in key areas, from health and nuclear medicine for cancer treatment to the green energy transition, including green hydrogen.
Our cooperation also extends to world-class research infrastructures, marine research, and efforts to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.
We are also creating and strengthening networks of European and South African researchers and innovators.

The ongoing convergence of global crisesโranging from climate disruptions to supply chain vulnerabilitiesโdemands robust, long-term international cooperation. In an era where public budgets alone cannot meet these challenges, establishing sustainable, value-driven investment partnerships is a strategic necessity.
This week, the European Union launched the EU Investment Roadshow in South Africa, spanning Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. This high-level initiative represents a practical realisation of Global GatewayโEuropeโs strategy for fostering high-quality, sustainable infrastructure connectivity based on mutual respect, strong environmental and governance standards, and local value addition.
Operating under the โฌ11.5 billion (ZAR 220 billion) Team Europe Investment Package unveiled by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President Cyril Ramaphosa, this roadshow aligns European public and private capital directly with South African NDP priorities.
โWe are delighted to host the first ever EU Investment Roadshow here in South Africa a unique opportunity for EU and South African business to be brought together with financial institutions and public and private investors. This is Global Gateway in action: closing the circle between the investment needs and the investment tools," says Sandra Kramer, Ambassador of the European Union to South Africa.
The bilateral dialogues and technical sessions are structured across five high-potential pillars:
* Just Energy Transition: Accelerating deployment of renewable energy and green technologies.
* Critical Raw Materials: Promoting sustainable extraction and local processing essential for global value chains.
* Pharmaceutical Value Chain: Enhancing local production, skills development, and biotech innovationโanchored by the recent trilateral agreement supporting Cape Town-based Biovac.
* Infrastructure, Transport & Logistics: Modernising transport corridors and port efficiencies to elevate regional connectivity, supported by recent strategic investments in Transnet.
* Digital & Connectivity: Enhancing competitiveness via sustainable digital infrastructure.
This roadshow moves past traditional aid frameworks toward a mature, predictable relationship built on trust, common interests, and shared prosperity.
