Works on the Urambi Hills track are now complete ๐ŸŽ‰ meaning those who approach Urambi Hill Trig Point from the north will have a better experience.
These upgrades complement the realigned south face track completed in 2024, together forming a highโ€‘quality and durable walking route. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ
The project included repairs to eroded sections of track, installation of approximately 80 rock steps, and improved drainage to enhance longโ€‘term resilience. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿชœ
The works also consolidated informal tracks by rehabilitating unsustainable desire lines, helping to protect surrounding habitat, including that of the threatened Pinkโ€‘tailed Wormโ€‘lizard. ๐Ÿชฑ

Thank you for slowing down while the signalised pedestrian crossing is installed on Canberra Avenue. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿพโ€โ™‚๏ธโ€โžก๏ธ๐Ÿšฆ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿพโ€โ™‚๏ธโ€โžก๏ธ
This crossing is designed to enhance pedestrian safety by controlling vehicle traffic and providing clear signals for when pedestrians can cross.
The project is removing some older paths which cross Canberra Avenue so that pedestrians are channelled to the new, safer signalised pedestrian crossing. Additional kerbs are also being built to discourage parking in the median area, which can impact visibility for both pedestrians and vehicles passing through.
The signalised pedestrian crossing is expected to be operational by early August 2026. All other works, following contract negotiations, are expected to be complete by the end of September 2026, weather and site conditions permitting.

Coppins Crossing Road between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue, will be temporarily closed in both directions from 2am on Monday 15 June to 6pm on Wednesday 17 June. This closure is required to install safety rails and screens on the southbound side of the bridge. This is to ensure the safety of road users, the public and on-site personnel.
Further closures of Coppins Crossing Road are planned for July to install safety rails and screens on the northbound side of the bridge to further enhance safety. Details of these closures will be provided closer to the closure dates.

Canberra continues to lead the nation on electric vehicle (EV) takeโ€‘up with EVs making up 36.5% of new car sales in May.

Weโ€™re building on that momentum by expanding the ACT Labor Governmentโ€™s Sustainable Household Scheme to help even more households make the switch.

From 1 July 2026:
โœ… Maximum loan increased to $20,000 for new applicants
โœ… Maximum EV price threshold set at $60,000

Through the scheme, eligible households can access affordable 3% interest loans to purchase an EV and other energyโ€‘efficient upgrades, with repayments over time and no upfront fees.

This is about making cleaner transport more accessible, helping Canberrans save on fuel, reduce emissions, and power their lives with clean energy.

Back in 2012, in my first Budget as Treasurer, we made a deliberate decision to take on one of the hardest reforms in Australian politics.

To phase out stamp duty over twenty years and replace it with a fairer system based on broadโ€‘based property taxes.

For fourteen Territory Budgets in a row we have reduced stamp duty. The 2026 Budget marks a major milestone in our progress.

Stamp duty reform does not stand alone. In this Budget we are:
โ€ข Investing in public and affordable housing
โ€ข Driving planning reform
โ€ข Introducing preโ€‘approved housing designs
โ€ข Reducing development costs

The goal is simple. More homes and lower barriers to entry.

I hear this often. It is not correct though.

When the GST was proposed, it was part of a broader reform plan. But the final model was shaped by what could pass the Senate.

The Howard Government needed the support of the Australian Democrats. That support came with conditions: fresh food being GSTโ€‘free and GSTโ€‘free treatment for private health and education.

These decisions narrowed the GST base and reduced the revenue it could raise. At the same time, all GST revenue was committed to the states and territories. In return, states and territories agreed to abolish some taxes, but only those they could afford to give up.

Once the GST base was reduced, the revenue pool was smaller and there was not enough funding to replace a large tax like stamp duty. Removing stamp duty would have required taxing food or increasing the GST rate. Neither was politically achievable. That is the legacy.

A big step forward for housing diversity in Canberra.

The Missing Middle reforms are now through the Legislative Assembly, opening the door to more diverse homes like duplexes, terraces, townhouses, villas and low rise apartments.

Supporting renters, growing families, and down sizers to find the right home in the region they want to live.
