The Women Political Leaders (WPL) is the global network of female politicians. The mission of WPL is to increase both the number and the influence of women in political leadership positions. WPL strives in all its activities to demonstrate the impact of more women in political leadership, for the global better. To accelerate, women need three things: communication, connection, community. At WPL, optimising the power of communication and connection builds new communities of knowledge for women political leaders everywhere. WPL believes that progress happens by convening women political leaders who have the drive and the influence to create positive change. WPL members are women in political office – Ministers, Members of Parliaments, Mayors. Membership is free and members are honoured by their participation. WPL is an independent, international, post-partisan and not-for-profit foundation based in Reykjavik, Iceland (the world champion of gender equality). Silvana Koch-Mehrin is the Founder and President of the WPL Foundation.

WPL brings together women ministers, parliamentarians and senior public decision-makers across Europe to strengthen cooperation on climate action and resilience.

🌍 Angela Lowe (Angela Lowe ), Senior Adviser for Community and Programme, has spent 10 years helping build and nurture the WPL community, bringing women leaders together and strengthening connections across borders.

Today, WPL celebrates Angela and wishes her a very happy birthday!

From the Munich Security Conference (MSC) and all WPL Summits to high-level convenings with influential women leaders and the launch of the WPL Kenya cohort in Nairobi, Angela has helped turn WPL’s mission into meaningful moments of connection.

On 14 October, Women Political Leaders (WPL) brought together women public leaders in Brussels for the inaugural convening of the Women Public Sector Climate Leaders Network. It was an opportunity to connect and exchange perspectives on women’s leadership in Europe’s climate transition.

Estonia has a new head of state 🇪🇪

Ülle Madise took the oath of office as President of the Republic of Estonia on 12 October. She is the second woman to hold the role, after Kersti Kaljulaid.

Before the presidency, she served as Chancellor of Justice for over ten years, safeguarding the constitution and the rights of people in Estonia.

WPL congratulates President Madise and wishes her every success in office 🤝

The supportive political spouse is a familiar image. Usually, she is a wife.

A satirical pamphlet reported to date from 1918 advised young women to look for a husband who would light the fire and clean the windows. More than a century later, support at home still shapes political careers.

🔧 Political offices are changing too, with childcare facilities, flexible working arrangements and proxy voting for parental absence.
