History of the Prague House,
the seat of the Delegation of Prague to the EU

The Prague House was built in the period of 1897–1899 (as most houses in this street) by the prominent Belgian architects M. Bosmans and Henry Van de Veldem, it was in fact their first joint project for the famous Belgian dentist family of Van Stratum. Dentistry had been passed down from one generation to another in this family since 1840 and private surgery was always favoured by an elite clientele. The last generation of dentists provided their services to, among others, prominent industrialists (for example the Solvay family), members of the Royal family and also some highly placed EU officials. The Prague House building is located in the vicinity of the European institutions, between the Marie-Louise and Ambiorix squares. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Vladimir 518 for a fascinating lecture exploring art, architecture and public space between 1958 and 1989.

An inspiring journey through history, creativity and the changing urban landscape, delivered with remarkable insight and passion.

The evening also featured the presentation of Europe Within Us (Evropa v nás), a book of interviews by Veronika Rajmanová and Petr Fischer.

📍 Ahead of the plenary session, members of the Czech National Delegation traditionally gathered at the Prague House in Brussels to discuss current European issues and the priorities of cities, municipalities and regions.

The delegation was briefed on the outcomes of the meeting of the Bureau of the European Committee of the Regions and discussed the agenda of the 173rd plenary session.

Key topics included:
🔹 Support for Ukraine
🔹 The EU’s future Multiannual Financial Framework
🔹 The automotive industry
🔹 Digital transformation

💻 Zdeněk Hřib presented the opinion “Cybersecurity Review and the Digital Networks Act”, for which he served as rapporteur and which was subsequently adopted by the plenary.

🛡️ The opinion focuses on strengthening the cyber resilience of European cities and regions and ensuring the active involvement of local and regional authorities in shaping future rules for digital infrastructure and networks.

🏙️ Another important item on the agenda was the presentation of a position paper by the Union of Towns and Municipalities of the Czech Republic, entitled “The Role of Cities and Municipalities in Achieving the Objectives of the European Union and the Czech Republic in 2028–2034.”

The subsequent discussion highlighted support for giving greater consideration to the territorial dimension of European policies, as well as the need for closer cooperation between national, regional and local authorities in preparing for the next programming period.

✨ An evening dedicated to design and architecture at the Prague House

On 30 September, we had the pleasure of bringing together architecture, design and the vision of Prague’s future for a special evening at the Prague House in Brussels.

At the heart of the evening was the presentation of the model of the Vltava Philharmonic Hall — one of Prague’s most anticipated architectural projects — alongside the Keep in Touch exhibition, presented as part of Brussels Design Week.

We were honoured to welcome Bohuslav Svoboda, Mayor of the City of Prague, Roman Bělor from the Vltava Philharmonic Hall, and professors Michal Froněk and Jan Němeček, Heads of the Product Design Studio at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design and Petr and Lucie Nosek from Nosek Foundry.

A wonderful evening of ideas, encounters and conversation about architecture, contemporary design and the Prague of tomorrow. ✨

✨ What an eventful week it has already been! ✨

🏙️ Following Monday’s workshop on the future of , Tuesday, 29 September marked the first item on the two-day Brussels programme of Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda, primátor hl. m. Prahy.

🇪🇺 Presidents and mayors of 35 European regions and cities, united within the EUregions4cohesion network, met with 30 Members of the European Parliament to discuss the future of Europe’s regions under the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). The debate was also attended and supported by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

🗣️ In his intervention, Mayor Svoboda stressed several key priorities for Prague and European cities:

✅ We need a strong territorial dimension and guarantees that regions and cities will be actively involved in programme design.
✅ Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI) are of strategic importance for Prague.
✅ Affordable housing in cities and depopulation of rural areas are two sides of the same coin.
✅ Prague supports earmarking at least 15% of EU funding for sustainable urban development directly within the future financial framework.

📍 As part of his working programme, the Mayor also visited the headquarters of Council of the European Union. Before the start of the COREPER II meeting, he had the opportunity to meet Vladimír Bärtl, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the EU, in the Czech national delegation room.

🛡️ In the afternoon, the Mayor visited NATO Headquarters where he met with Ambassador David Konecký, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to NATO.

The discussions focused on key security issues, including:
🔹 Strategic communication
🔹 Countering disinformation
🔹 The functioning of the integrated rescue system
🔹 The role of local and regional authorities in strengthening societal resilience

🌍 Security and resilience are becoming increasingly important priorities in the next EU budget cycle, creating new opportunities for cities such as Prague, including within the future European Competitiveness Fund.

🏙️ On Monday, together with Metropolitní oblasti a aglomerace v ČR we hosted a roundtable discussion on the future of European metropolitan areas.

🇪🇺 Representatives of metropolitan regions from across Europe met with representatives of the European Commission, European Committee of the Regions, Council of the European Union and European Parliament to discuss the future shape of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and, above all, the role that cities and metropolitan areas should play within it.

🗣️ On behalf of Prague, Mr. Zdeněk Kovařík, Prague City Councillor, highlighted the crucial role of metropolitan areas as drivers of economic growth, innovation and competitiveness, and stressed the importance of ensuring that cities remain a strong pillar of future cohesion policy.

🔜 Looking forward to continuing this important discussion in the months ahead!
