Sushi Workshop for Youth
The Programme and Youth Coordination Division, in collaboration with the Japan Foundation, successfully conducted a one-day Sushi Workshop for youth at the Royal Institute for Tourism and Hospitality (RITH). The workshop was organized with the objective of promoting cultural exchange, enhancing culinary skills among youth, and providing exposure to Japanese cuisine and food preparation techniques.
The workshop was facilitated by two Japanese chefs from the Japan Foundation, who shared their professional expertise and knowledge on the preparation of sushi and other aspects of Japanese culinary culture. A total of 31 participants attended the workshop, comprising of final year students of RITH and youth volunteers.
Participants were introduced to different types of sushi, ingredients commonly used, and the traditional methods of preparation. The practical session allowed participants to engage directly in the preparation of sushi under the guidance of the Japanese chefs. Participants learned essential techniques such as rice preparation, seasoning, cutting and handling ingredients, rolling sushi, and presentation methods. The hands-on nature of the workshop enabled participants to actively participate and gain practical experience in preparing sushi.
The sushi tasting session prepared by the participants and chefs was graced by the Director of Department of Education Programmes and the Director General of Department of Workforce Planning and Skills Development.
Overall, the Sushi Workshop was successfully conducted and achieved its intended objectives. The programme provided meaningful exposure to international culinary practices, encouraged youth participation in skills-based learning, and fostered greater appreciation for Japanese culture and cuisine among the participants.
