Nasese Foreshore is an important habitat for migratory shorebirds that travel thousands of kilometers to reach Fiji. It is an important place to rest, feed, and refuel before continuing their journey. Protecting Nasese helps safeguard these remarkable birds and the coastal habitats they depend on.

Join us for the Migratory Shorebird Count and help us spot, count, and record the incredible birds visiting Fiji’s coastal habitats.

How to join:

Have you ever wondered which migratory shorebirds travel to visit Fiji's shores each year?

Join us at the Nasese Foreshore for a fun and interactive afternoon of citizen science as we discover, count, and learn about Fiji's remarkable migratory shorebirds, often referred to as Fiji's "Original Tourists." These incredible birds undertake epic journeys across continents and oceans, relying on Fiji's coastal habitats as important resting and feeding grounds along their migration routes.

Activities Include:
✅ Coastal Clean-Up Campaign
✅ Creating bird-friendly features such as water stations and nesting boxes using recycled materials
✅ Migratory Shorebird Count
✅ Recording and documenting bird observations
✅ Sharing and discussing bird counts

Whether you're an experienced birdwatcher, a student, a family looking for a meaningful weekend activity, or simply curious about nature, everyone is welcome to participate.

Your observations will contribute valuable information that helps scientists and conservationists better understand migratory shorebird populations, monitor changes over time, and protect the coastal habitats these birds depend on. Every bird counted and every observation recorded helps support conservation efforts in Fiji and across the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

This October, we shine the spotlight on Fiji’s migratory shorebirds.

Every year, these incredible travellers make long journeys across the globe, with some visiting Fiji’s shores to rest, feed, and refuel before continuing their journey.

This year, World Migratory Bird Day 2026 brings the message: “Every Bird Counts – Your Observation Matters.”
It’s a reminder that something as simple as noticing, pointing it out, and recording a shore bird can help us learn more about these amazing visitors and the habitats they depend on.

Looking back....what a week it was!

A huge vinaka vakalevu to everyone who came together at the hub. Our youths, community reps, partners, supporters, and everyone who showed up, shared, listened, and took part.

The Fiji Hub ended, but the conversations and connections made will continue.

Together, we keep working towards a Pacific where people, culture and nature thrive together.

Continuing with Part 2 of the winning reel from the PCNC11 Fiji Hub Field Trip Reel Challenge, Sereima Nai shares what stood out to her during her visit to Naivilaca, Rewa.

For her, the experience was a reminder of how closely people, nature, and conservation are connected, and how traditional knowledge and community involvement can make a real difference in caring for our environment and natural resources.

It’s always encouraging to hear these reflections from community members and to see how a field visit can leave us with new ideas, lessons, and a deeper appreciation for the work being done on the ground. 🌱

A wonderful reflection from Sereima Nai, winner PART 1 PCNC11 - FIJI HUB field trip reel challenge.

As part of the challenge, participants were asked to:

In your Reel, please tell us what the field trip experience means to you. What did you learn, see, or take away from the visit to the Naduruvatu Gymnosperm Park?

Sereima Nai, a community worker and representative from Nadogo, Macuata, stood out with her reflection on the importance of understanding and valuing nature, and walked away with first prize.

Her words are a simple reminder that conservation begins with connection, understanding, and appreciation for the natural world around us.

Congratulations, Sereima, and vinaka vakalevu to everyone who took part in the challenge!
