Our statement regarding our joint administration of the City with Birmingham Greens, Better Birmingham Independent Group and Birmingham Independent Group:
"The Birmingham Liberal Democrats remain focused on delivering the commitments set out in the Fairer Birmingham Partnership Agreement (FBPA) to improve the lives of people across our city.
The FBPA is a local agreement between the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party, Better Birmingham and Birmingham Independent Group members to deliver for Birmingham. It is not a merger of political parties, and each party continues to hold and express its own national policies and positions.
This administration was formed, following an election that produced a highly fractured council chamber, to provide stable leadership for Birmingham City Council for the four years until the next local elections in 2030. Birmingham City Council endured a major financial crisis in 2023 with a record number of Commissioners appointed and stable leadership is vital for its continued recovery. Given the position other parties had taken about who they would and would not work with, no alternative administration could be credibly formed.
The FBPA commits the administration to tackle the issues residents tell us matter most: resolving the long-running bin dispute, cleaning up our streets, addressing fly-tipping, improving local infrastructure and service delivery, and restoring the Council's financial stability. As long as the other members of the administration remain committed to it, we will too.
Where there are differences on national issues, the Liberal Democrats will continue to uphold our own values and the positions set by our party leadership and we accept that the other parties within the administration will do the same. We have always been clear that antisemitism, racism, and all forms of hatred have no place in our society. We strongly disagree with the motion passed by the Green Party regarding Zionism and remain firmly committed to a two-state solution.
We have received reassurances that the Birmingham Greens also remain fully committed to the FBPA and will not seek to change any aspect of it as a result of the motion passed at their recent conference.
Our priority remains delivering competent, stable, and accountable local government for Birmingham residents. The FBPA provides us with the framework to deliver that within a multi-party administration and we remain fully committed to it."
