How can I protect my child from measles?

With measles spreading in north London, a doctor and nurse explain how to identify measles, who is most at risk - and how to protect your family.

❗️When a child catches measles, some develop complications like pneumonia, or swelling of the brain, which in rare cases can sadly lead to death.

✅The best protection is two doses of MMR or MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella and varicella) vaccine
✅The vaccine is safe, free and highly effective
✅Check your child's vaccinations are up to date in their red book
✅Book catch up vaccinations with your GP practice if needed

On Thursday our Involvement team visited the McVitie's factory in Harlesden to speak to residents about how they can contribute to West and North London ICB's new involvement strategy, whilst providing health and wellbeing support for staff.

The aim of these events is to bring healthcare to people who can’t access it easily due to long shift patterns. The team worked in partnership with the Brent Health Matters team, Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, Brent Public Health and McVitie’s Occupational Health team to carry out blood pressure and glucose level checks.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, the ICB team provided one-to-one support and health conversations, speaking to around 20 staff members, with our partners providing over 50 health checks.

Steph is lead nurse for immunisations and mum to a toddler.

She got him vaccinated as a baby, so she knew he’d be protected from diseases including measles while he was at nursery.

She reassures parents that any short term discomfort a child may get from a vaccination is worth the long lasting protection you're giving them from serious diseases.
