ARTISTIC EXCHANGES: LORENZO MODICA AND MARK FARID
How can art help us see the places we inhabit and the systems that shape our everyday lives?
ICI London and UAL: University of the Arts London invite you to an evening of artists’ talks exploring new research and artworks developed through two international residencies: the University of the Arts London’s Fine Art Research Fellowship at the British School at Rome and ICI London’s inaugural artist residency at Camberwell College of Arts.

Meet Italian visual artist Lorenzo Modica, selected through an open call for a residency at Camberwell Space (2–26 November). His practice explores place through painting, moving between abstraction and figuration and drawing inspiration from illustration, comics, collage and graphic communication. Through colour, form and experimentation, his work brings irony and vulnerability into contemporary painting.
AT A CROSSROADS: WHAT CROSSING THE ROAD REVEALS ABOUT HOW WE ARE GOVERNED – MARK FARID
Artist and researcher Mark Farid explores what pedestrian crossings reveal about power, public space and the rules that shape our behaviour. During a three-month residency at the British School at Rome, he worked with filmmakers to document crossings in eight cities across seven countries, from Warsaw and Rome to Chengdu and Accra.
Through striking encounters filmed around the world, the project asks how infrastructure, social expectations and governance influence the way we move — often without us even noticing. Mark will also introduce the next phase of his research in England, exploring public access, private land, fencing and the technologies that shape our movement.
