Rediscovering the Story of the Land 🏺🌳
Last week, we reopened Gal’on Fortress in Guvrin Forest following extensive excavation, conservation, development, and accessibility work carried out together with the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Dating back to the mid-12th century BCE, the fortress stands in the heart of Guvrin Forest and offers a glimpse into a period when Canaanites, Israelites, and Philistines competed for control of the region.

After initially opening to the public around six years ago, the site has now undergone a significant renewal, making it easier for visitors to explore and experience this remarkable piece of history.

As part of the project, we invested approximately NIS 400,000 in conserving the fortress, developing its surroundings, and improving accessibility. The work included an access road and parking area, a picnic area, accessible parking spaces, an accessible path to the fortress, new signage, and conservation work highlighting the structure and its rooms.

At KKL-JNF, preserving heritage sites is part of our connection to the roots of the land and our responsibility to keep its stories alive for future generations.

Together with the Israel Antiquities Authority, we continue to develop and make Israel’s heritage and natural sites accessible, so that everyone can discover, experience, and connect with the stories they hold.

Saving plants you may have never heard of 🌱

Some of Israel’s most important plants are also the ones you’re least likely to notice.

At KKL-JNF, we work with botanical gardens, nurseries, researchers, and conservation partners to protect rare and endangered native plant species before they disappear.
We collect seeds, grow plants under carefully controlled conditions, study what they need to thrive, and create backup populations that can help protect vulnerable species in the wild.

Some of these plants may never become famous. They may never cover a forest or attract thousands of visitors.
But every species is part of Israel’s natural heritage, and every one is worth protecting.

Because protecting nature means protecting even the smallest and most overlooked parts of it. 🌿💚

This Week in History: 69 Years Ago
October 30, 1957

This week in 1957, one of KKL-JNF’s major engineering projects was underway: the drainage of the Hula Marshes.

In this photograph from the KKL-JNF Photo Archive, Dr. Granot explains KKL-JNF’s plan to drain the marshes, a project intended to transform the region and prepare new land for agriculture.

Since then, the Hula Valley has undergone many changes. Today, KKL-JNF’s Hula Lake Park is one of Israel’s most important natural sites and a major stopover for migratory birds from around the world. 🦩🌿

When a forest becomes part of the community

A forest can be much more than a place to visit.

At KKL-JNF, we are developing a nationwide network of community forests, working together with local residents and authorities to shape the green spaces right next to where people live.

Together, we develop walking and running trails, cycling paths, picnic areas, viewpoints, heritage sites, and spaces for community activities, based on the needs and ideas of the people who live nearby.

And the residents aren’t just visitors. Local volunteers, known as Community Forest Trustees, help care for the forest, guide visitors, document nature, and organize educational and community activities.

Our goal is simple: to make the forest part of everyday community life, creating a stronger connection between people, nature, and the places they call home. 🌳💚

Giving Damaged Landscapes a Second Chance

What happens when a landscape that has been damaged for decades gets a chance to come back to life?
At the Kishon River in northern Israel, we’re helping make that happen.
KKL-JNF has approved an investment of NIS 100 million in the restoration and development of the Lower Kishon Park, one of the largest environmental rehabilitation projects in the Haifa Bay area.

The project will transform approximately 950 acres between the Kishon River and the surrounding urban area into an open natural space for people and wildlife.

The plans combine ecological restoration with walking and cycling paths, recreation, education, sports, and community spaces.

For us, restoration is not simply about bringing nature back. It’s about creating places where nature and communities can thrive together. 🌿

The first squill are blooming in KKL-JNF forests 🌿

If you’ve been exploring KKL-JNF forests this week, you may have already spotted the first squill flowers of the season.

Their tall white flower stalks have begun appearing at Mount Eitan in the Jerusalem Hills, USA Park, and the HaMalachim and Shachariya Forests in southern Israel.

And here’s the interesting part: the squill doesn’t wait for the first rain to bloom. As the days get shorter, it senses that autumn is approaching and begins to flower, even while the ground is still dry. Its leaves will appear later, with the winter rains.

The squill is one of nature’s favorite signs that autumn is on its way, and over the coming weeks, its delicate white blooms are expected to appear in more parts of Israel.

KKL-JNF World Leadership and Marketing Conference Begins in Northern Israel 🌎

Yesterday evening, we opened KKL-JNF’s World Leadership and Marketing Conference at Hula Lake Park, with this year’s conference focused on the rehabilitation and strengthening of northern Israel.

Around 100 KKL-JNF leaders and professionals from 33 countries have arrived in Israel to see our work on the ground and take part in efforts to support the region’s recovery.

The evening was attended by President of Israel Isaac Herzog and KKL-JNF Chairman Eyal Ostrinsky, and featured a moving performance by Sagui Dekel-Chen, a survivor of captivity from Kibbutz Nir Oz, together with a choir of children from around the North.

Over the past year, KKL-JNF has invested more than NIS 1 billion in the development and rehabilitation of northern Israel, including strengthening infrastructure and communities, education, security, supporting young families and encouraging more to relocate to the north, and restoring forests damaged during the war.

Throughout the week, KKL-JNF leaders and professionals from Israel and worldwide will meet with residents and local authorities, visit projects along the northern border, volunteer in communities near the front line, and hear first-hand about the challenges and opportunities facing the region.

We will continue working together to strengthen northern Israel, support its communities, and build a stronger future for generations to come. 💚

The cranes are here! 🩶🪽

You can already feel autumn arriving at KKL-JNF’s Hula Lake Park. The first cranes have landed, marking the beginning of one of the most beautiful seasons of the year.

The cranes arrived last week, and over the coming weeks, tens of thousands more are expected to join them on their journey from southern Russia, Finland, and Estonia to Africa. This time, they’re also bringing the younger generation, hatched just this past spring.

And they’re certainly not alone. Flamingos, spoonbills, shorebirds, ibises, herons, and many more migratory birds are already making their way through the lake.
The migration season is only getting started, and we can’t wait to see what it brings. 🌿
