The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Department of Economics once again demonstrated its growing presence in the field of finance and investment as BS Economics students secured multiple awards in the recently concluded MART x CFA Cup Season 5.
The annual competition, organized by the Money Market Association of the Philippines (MART) and the CFA Society Philippines (CFAP), with support from the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), aims to foster the next generation of business and finance professionals. The competition exposed junior and senior college students to the dynamics of the Philippine fixed income market, allowing participants to trade government securities using the Bloomberg platform while receiving mentorship from seasoned fixed income dealers from MART-member banks.
Representing UPLB were two student teams under the guidance of Senior Lecturer Everette Villaraza as faculty adviser.
Team Investment Grade Associates, composed of Sophia Segura, Dacian Ho, Ralph Luis Racadag, and Renz Ivan Colores, earned an impressive 2nd Runner-Up finish. The team also received the Market Movers Award and the Most Agile Traders Award. Assisting the team as special adviser was Guiller Villaflor, a UPLB senior student and veteran participant from the previous season.
Meanwhile, Team Never Yield, composed of Carmelo Jorge Derder, Audrey Lachica, Lucille Osorio, and Jared Carlo Manaois, also delivered a strong performance and secured the Market Movers Award. Guiller Villaflor likewise served as the team’s special adviser.
Notably, this marks only the second time that students from the UPLB Department of Economics have participated in the competition, making the teams’ achievements even more remarkable.
