Dive into Fishionary, PFDA's word catch for Volume 3!

The answer to last issue's Fishionary is Transshipment. It is the offloading of catch from a fishing vessel to a shore facility or carrier ship. It allows catches to be sorted, cleaned, packed, inspected by customs or fisheries agencies, and sent to global markets while cutting down vessel travel costs.

| The Walking Fish 👣🐟

Did you know that some fish can survive outside the water for a while? Meet the climbing perch (Anabas testudineus), locally known as puyo or martiniko! This fascinating freshwater fish has a special breathing organ that allows it to take in oxygen from the air. It can even use its fins and body movements to travel short distances over land under suitable conditions. Talk about a fish with a spooky escape trick!

But wait, there's more! In 2025, the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) Regional Fish Ports (RFPs) recorded a total of 14.29 metric tons (MT) of climbing perch. Who knew this little fish could make such a splash?
