We've revised our plans for the proposed housing developments at Sunset Way (also known as Maju Forest) and Gillman Barracks to set aside more greenery and reduce the areas needed for development.

The revised plans take into account the findings of environmental and heritage studies published in July 2026, as well as feedback received from residents, nature groups, heritage stakeholders and the wider public through the public consultation and engagement sessions.

Here's what's changing:

🌿 At Maju Forest, we will retain about 10 hectares of greenery, up from 8 hectares under the original conceptual plan. This means that about 45% of the 23 hectares site will be set aside for greenery. The larger, more contiguous forest area will better support wildlife movement and biodiversity.

🌳 At Gillman Barracks, about 12 hectares will be set aside for greenery, up from 8 hectares under the original conceptual plan, which will be approximately 60% of the greenery currently found at Gillman Barracks. 25 buildings of 'Exceptional' or 'High' heritage significance will also be retained, preserving important aspects of the area's history and character.

🦋The green areas at Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks will be safeguarded as nature parks, to support biodiversity conservation and provide nature-based recreation options for residents.

🏡 The revised plans will provide about 11,000 new homes for Singaporeans across both sites. This comprises 4,000 public housing units at Maju Forest and around 7,000 homes at Gillman Barracks, of which around 5,500 is for public housing.

We thank everyone who shared their views and suggestions, which have helped shape the revised plans.

Design excellence is best experienced in person. Last weekend, we took 𝙋*𝘿𝘼20 beyond the exhibition walls with guided tours of award-winning projects, led by the designers themselves.

In Redhill, participants saw how design gave new life to two 1970s buildings, opening them up to the neighbourhood as inclusive community hubs. In Jurong, they explored how nature and the built environment come together to serve both people and the ecology around them.

The tours may be over, but you can continue exploring Singapore’s most impactful and transformative designs at 𝙋*𝘿𝘼20: 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣. Discover all 130 Designs of the Year and 47 Designers of the Year brought together in one space, and uncover the stories behind the works as you pore over inspiration sketches, prototypes and insights from the recipients.

Catch the exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore before it closes soon on 1 Nov. Admission is free, so start planning your visit today!
