LifeFlight of Maine We are a nonprofit committed to ensuring that everyone, in every community in Maine, has access to critical care and medical transport when needed.

LifeFlight of Maine aircraft, which include three helicopters and one airplane, bring lifesaving equipment and critical care nurses and paramedics to emergency scenes and small, rural hospitals throughout the state. Once stabilized, patients are then transported to one of Maine’s three trauma centers, or the nearest appropriately equipped hospital that is capable of caring for the patient’s individual needs. LifeFlight’s helicopters, based at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, and the Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport, cover the entire state of Maine and offshore islands. In addition, LifeFlight operates a King Air turbo-prop plane that can transport patients to specialists as far away as North Carolina, Ohio and Toronto. LifeFlight complements and supports the work of local physicians, mid-level providers, nurses and local emergency medical services (EMS) in caring for the critically ill and injured. All of our aircraft are staffed by teams of highly qualified critical care transport nurses and paramedics. There are typically three ways to request LifeFlight's services:

1. Emergency and specialty physicians can call for LifeFlight whenever they believe a patient needs a critical response, including specialty care, state-of-the-art medical equipment and rapid transport from a community hospital to a medical center with trauma capabilities.

2. Local EMS personnel, guided by supervising emergency physicians and Maine EMS protocols, can call for a helicopter to come directly to an accident scene when the patient needs special care and rapid transport to a trauma center.

3. Community physicians can also call LifeFlight to transport a critically ill or injured patient from a remote location, such as an island or peninsula, to a major medical center. LifeFlight of Maine uses the strictest medical utilization criteria in the country to make sure every flight is medically necessary. Use of LifeFlight is a physician-prescribed critical medical service, organized and managed in the same way hospital emergency departments and physicians provide care to all of the people of Maine. When care is provided, the patient and the patient’s insurance company are billed for the service. Just as Maine’s hospitals provide service to all patients in need of care, LifeFlight services are also provided regardless of a patient’s financial resources or ability to pay. LifeFlight is Maine’s only emergency medical helicopter service and is licensed as a scene response air ambulance allowing a full range of transport services for both interhospital and direct scene support of ground EMS providers. When inclement weather prevents LifeFlight from flying, our highly skilled flight crews are still in action, often headed to community hospitals or accident scenes via ground ambulances provided by Capital Ambulance in Bangor and United Ambulance in Lewiston. LifeFlight is fully accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.

Today is World Stroke Day, and we are joining the American Stroke Association to raise awareness of stroke symptoms and to highlight the importance of calling 911 immediately when the signs below are present:

B - balance loss
E- eye (vision) changes

F- face drooping
A- arm weakness
S- speech difficulty
T- time to call 911

In 2025, LifeFlight transported 250 patients with stroke symptoms. When a stroke occurs, every minute counts. Recognizing the signs and calling 911 immediately can help patients get the specialized care they need faster, improving their chances for the best possible outcome. Remember - "BE FAST!"

Now Hiring: Rotor Wing Captain (Bangor) 🚁

Utilizing a fleet of Leonardo A109SP helicopters with 4-axis autopilot, LifeFlight flies single pilot IFR helicopter operations across Maine’s vast and varied landscape, day and night, 365 days a year. No two flight operations are the same. This is a challenging, unique, and rewarding opportunity for an experienced rotor wing pilot looking to be part of a program making a meaningful difference across the state.

At LifeFlight, the RWC serves as the pilot-in-command, leading and executing flight assignments in a safe, effective, and professional manner. The RWC evaluates Visual Flight Rules (VFR) options and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) options when applicable. The RWC is expected to promote a Just and Accountable Culture, teamwork and strong Crew Resource Management, and work collaboratively with other members of the flight program to complete tasks.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our 2026 Grateful Patient Reunion earlier this month! 💚

This experience was incredibly meaningful to our crew members, who were humbled that so many former patients and their families attended. We hope it was as meaningful for everyone who was able to join us.

We would like to welcome Amy Root, who recently joined the LifeFlight Foundation team as the Chief of Philanthropy!

In this leadership role, she is responsible for developing the Foundation’s major gifts program, helping secure the funds necessary to meet the growing demands of LifeFlight of Maine’s mission.

Amy previously worked at the Foundation as Director of Development from 2012 to 2018, where she helped secure $12 million in a capital campaign. She also helped raise the funds for LifeFlight to acquire its third helicopter, “Whiskey Mike,” in 2017. During her years with the Foundation, Amy helped to spearhead several fundraising events, including the “Islesboro Crossing” which has grown into the annual Cross for LifeFlight, the LifeFlight Foundation’s largest and most important fundraising event of the year.

Amy left the LifeFlight Foundation in 2018 to pursue other opportunities. Since then, she has worked for a number of other local and regional nonprofits. Most recently, she served as the Director of Capital Campaign for the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay.

When the opportunity arrived to return to LifeFlight and help with fundraising, Amy jumped at it.

“I am so fortunate that I get to sit with some of the most generous people in the world,” said Amy, “and help them make meaningful contributions to worthy causes, and LifeFlight is top of the list for me.”
