This week, we celebrate Cramerton Public Works Week and recognize the dedicated employees who keep the Town of Cramerton running every day. From maintaining our streets to collecting leaves, responding to emergencies, and improving our infrastructure, their hard work often happens behind the scenes but makes a difference throughout our community.

At the June 2, 2026 Board of Commissioners meeting, the Mayor and Board proudly honored our Public Works Department with a proclamation recognizing their service and commitment.

Thank you to the Town of Cramerton Public Works crew for all that you do for our community!

June has arrived and that leaves us only 1 month left as we continue to countdown to 250! This week we travel to Town of Cramerton, NC to visit the Stuart W Cramer 1868-1940 marker located at the intersection of Wilkinson Boulevard (U.S. 74) and Lakewood Road. Erected in 1969, it reads “Engineer and inventor. Pioneered advances in textile mill air conditioning. Home 3 mi. SW.”

Stuart Warren Cramer contributed significantly to the cotton mill industry through his engineering and invention skills. In 1895 he established his own business and, over the next ten years, designed and equipped over 150 (or roughly one-third of all) cotton mills in the South.

Cramer turned his profits back into his own mills, especially those in the community that came to bear his name, Cramerton. Hailed in the trade press as a “model community,” the mill village southeast of Gastonia had been known as Mayesworth for its founder J. H. Mayes. In 1915 Cramer acquired controlling interest of the company and in 1922 the name was changed.

Most significant about Stuart W. Cramer is the role he played in the development of air conditioning. In a paper read before an ACMA convention on May 16-17, 1906, Cramer coined the term “air conditioning.”

💜⚾ From the Town of Cramerton ⚾💜
Our thoughts and prayers are with the students, players, coaches, staff, and families of Stuart W Cramer High School during this heartbreaking time.
It is difficult to comprehend the pain of losing a coach, husband, father, and mentor so suddenly while doing something he loved on the baseball field. This loss reaches far beyond the game, touching the hearts of an entire community.
We lift up his wife, family, friends, teammates, and everyone whose lives he impacted through his leadership, encouragement, and dedication.
May God surround the entire Stuart W Cramer community with comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead. 🙏🏼💜
