A mother who won’t see her children grow up. Children whose dreams and futures have been stolen. Families forever changed, and our community grieving another act of gun violence.
There is still much we don’t know, and it’s important that we give investigators the opportunity to establish the facts while respecting the families of those impacted and their loved ones.
The City of Erie Government will hold a press conference today at 4pm to provide additional information, and I encourage everyone to listen to the information provided by officials and be mindful of the families as details continue to emerge. A candlelight vigil is also planned from 6 to 10pm today in front of 722 Perry Street for those wanting an opportunity to gather in remembrance and support.
Government cannot solve every problem, but that doesn't excuse us from addressing the ones we can. We need to take a serious look at where our systems are falling short, while also recognizing that violence has become far too common in our society. No one should have to live with that reality, and no family should have to wonder whether their neighborhood is safe. This is not normal, regardless of how common it has become.
Our responsibility as elected officials cannot end with a statement of sympathy. As we learn more, I am committed to working with our city and county partners to understand where county government can help, what support is needed, and what we can do to prevent future tragedies.
For now, let’s give the friends, families, and their communities the compassion, privacy, and support they deserve.
