Central Contra Costa Sanitary District Providing wastewater collection & cleaning to nearly 500,000 in the East Bay. We’re your friendly neighborhood sewer utility … and so much more!

The Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (Central San) has been protecting public health and the environment since 1946. Today we collect and clean wastewater from nearly 500,000 residents and more than 15,000 businesses in central Contra Costa County, California. Whatever goes down your drains travels through our 1,500-mile sewer system to our treatment plant in Martinez, where we clean about 13 billion gallons of wastewater every year. We also operate a popular Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, provide recycled water for landscape irrigation and industrial use, and promote pollution prevention through a variety of education, outreach, and inspection programs. Don’t let those wipes come back to haunt you! 👻

Unlike toilet paper, most wipes are made of plastic and do not break down in water. They remain mostly intact when flushed, creating trouble in your pipes and ours.

Help avoid monster clogs and plumbing nightmares by disposing of all wipes in the trash!

We were delighted to welcome legislative staff for a tour of our wastewater treatment plant yesterday, where they got an inside look at how we collect and clean over 13 billion gallons of wastewater every year.

The visit was part of a tour of special districts in Contra Costa County hosted by the California Special Districts Association. Thank you to everyone who attended!

Thanks for celebrating Pollution Prevention Week with us! Here’s one more simple tip: Don’t flush your drugs!

Flushing pharmaceuticals can pollute our waterways, harming fish and other wildlife. By properly disposing of unwanted/expired medications, you can help protect the environment and reduce the risk of accidental poisonings and drug misuse.
