What's hiding in your garage? 🔥

Between storage, charging tools, lawn equipment, and the door that connects to your home, garages have plenty of fire-safety details that are easy to overlook.

We put together a practical guide for Pittsburgh-area homeowners: 7 garage fire-safety blind spots you can check in about 10 minutes.

It covers charging areas, fuel storage, attached-garage separation, carbon monoxide, family escape plans, and why the type of alarm in a garage matters.

Take a look, walk through your garage, and share it with someone who could use the checklist.

Have you turned the heat on yet?

Around Western Pennsylvania, this is the time of year when furnaces start running more often, fireplaces get used again, and space heaters come back out of storage.

Before all of that becomes part of the daily routine, it’s worth taking 10–15 minutes to walk through your home.

A few things to check:

• When was your heating equipment last professionally inspected?
• Have you tested your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?
• Is that space heater still in good condition, with enough clear space around it?
• Is your fireplace or chimney ready for regular use?
• Does everyone in the house still know where to meet outside if an alarm sounds?

We put together a practical seven-point fall heating safety guide for Pittsburgh-area homeowners.

No scare tactics. Just useful things you can look at before heating season gets into full swing.

How many rechargeable devices are plugged in around your house right now?
Phones. Laptops. Power tools. Cordless vacuums. Power banks. E-bikes and scooters. Lithium-ion batteries have become part of everyday life, which makes knowing how to charge and handle them safely worth a few minutes of attention.
October is Fire Prevention Month, and this year's Fire Prevention Week focused specifically on safe charging habits.
A couple of simple things to check today:
• Are devices charging on a hard, flat surface instead of a bed, couch or blanket?
• If you have an e-bike or scooter, is it charging somewhere that would not block an exit if something went wrong?
We put together a practical guide covering seven lithium-ion battery risks homeowners should know, along with warning signs, disposal guidance and a quick checklist you can use around your own home.

How long do fire extinguishers actually last?

It’s a simple question with a surprisingly complicated answer. There isn’t one expiration age that applies to every extinguisher — and a gauge in the green doesn’t necessarily tell you the whole story.

We put together a new Pittsburgh homeowner’s guide covering:

• How to find the age of your extinguisher
• What the pressure gauge can — and can’t — tell you
• Signs that an extinguisher should be replaced or serviced
• What to do after an extinguisher has been used
• How to check for recalls
• Where Pittsburgh-area homeowners can take old fire extinguishers for proper disposal

We also verified current Western Pennsylvania disposal information, because not every household hazardous-waste program accepts fire extinguishers.

If you have an extinguisher sitting in a kitchen cabinet, garage, basement, or closet and you’re not sure whether you can still depend on it, this is a good place to start.

Yesterday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission told consumers to immediately stop using certain carbon monoxide and natural gas detectors after receiving reports that they failed to alarm when gas or carbon monoxide was present.

What really caught our attention was the bigger lesson.

A safety product can have great marketing, thousands of comments, dramatic testimonials and impressive features.

None of those things prove how it will perform when your family actually needs it.

Our newest article looks at the CPSC warning, explains what UL 2034 really means, breaks down the difference between detecting CO and sounding an alarm, and gives homeowners 13 questions to ask before buying life safety equipment.

Marketing can earn your attention. Evidence should earn your trust.
