Tiny shells, big sign. π¦ͺ
Freshwater mussels are showing up in Pittsburgh-area waterways, and that's exciting news.
Why? Because mussels are sensitive to pollution and can help indicate improving water quality. Their presence is one of many signs that our rivers are healthier today than they were decades ago.
Cleaner rivers don't happen overnight. They happen through years of investment, collaboration, science, stewardship, and people who care deeply about protecting our waterways.
Shoutout to our regional partners, researchers, environmental organizations, municipalities, and agencies working every day to improve water quality throughout our watershed.
This is a win worth celebrating. π

Paint, pesticides, automotive fluids, and other household chemicals donβt belong down drains, in the woods, or sitting in your basement forever.
Thankfully, our friends at Pennsylvania Resources Council make it easy to dispose of them safely through Household Hazardous Waste collection events across Western PA. Most events are drive-through, pre-registration is required, and you stay in your vehicle while materials are unloaded.
Protecting our environment starts at home, bestie π
