Don’t let food safety become a fright this Halloween! 🍬 If you’re setting out a communal candy bowl for trick-or-treaters, keep it in a clean, dry spot and consider handing out individually wrapped treats to help minimize handling.

Choose candy from approved food sources and use caution when receiving homemade cookies or unpackaged snacks offered by neighbors, as their ingredients and preparation may be unknown. A few simple precautions can help keep your little ghouls and goblins safe this Halloween!

Food safety starts with understanding what’s on your plate — and what’s on the package! California’s Assembly Bill 660 (AB 660), effective July 1, 2026, standardizes food date labels to help consumers better understand the difference between food quality and food safety dates.

✅ “Best if Used By” indicates quality.
⚠️ “Use By” indicates food safety.

This World Food Day, Riverside County Environmental Health encourages everyone to stay informed, make food safety a priority, and help reduce unnecessary food waste.

Today is Global Handwashing Day! 👐 Proper handwashing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help prevent the spread of germs and protect our community’s health. Remember to wash your hands with soap and clean, running water for at least 20 seconds, especially before preparing or eating food, after using the restroom, and after coughing or sneezing. Small habits make a big difference! Let’s work together to keep Riverside County healthy, one handwash at a time. 💙

🔥🔥 Environmental Health & Fire Safety go hand in hand!

It’s the start of Fire Prevention Week and it’s a great time to remember that safely handling and storing hazardous materials, chemicals, and household waste can help protect your home, your community, and the environment. When it’s time for disposal, make sure hazardous waste is handled properly—not tossed in the trash or poured down the drain.

Hello October! 🍂 Fall doesn’t mean mosquito season is over! 🦟

Even as temperatures begin to cool-- or in our current case, rise-- mosquitoes can still be active. Help reduce mosquito breeding around your home by regularly checking for and eliminating standing water in flowerpots, buckets, birdbaths, outdoor toys, gutters, and other containers.

Don’t forget to protect yourself, too! Wear long sleeves and pants when possible, use an EPA-registered insect repellent, and make sure window and door screens are in good condition.
A few simple steps can help keep mosquitoes from making themselves at home this fall!
