CARECEN is a 501 (c) 3 community based organization that offers legal, educational, housing and other services to the Central American/Latino community in the Washington Metropolitan Area. CARECEN provides information, access, direct services and civic and life-skill training necessary for clients to attain a safe and stable environment for their families. CARECEN was established in 1981 to protect the rights of refugees from Central America's wars and to provide direct legal services that would ease their transition. Over time, the organization has evolved and grown with the immigrant community into broader areas of community service and economic development, establishing itself as a strong and visible advocate on critical local and national policy issues, particularly those relating to immigration and housing. We now represent a new and diverse generation of Latinos, accompanying them through the stages of the long and complex migration process, confronting all the legal and policy issues affecting them at each step of that journey. All of our programs are available to low and moderate income Latinos living in any part of the Washington Metropolitan Area, though the majority of our clients reside in Washington, D.C.

Last week, we were proud to recognize Steptoe LLP with the Saul Solórzano Justice Award at CARECEN’s 45th Anniversary.

Named in honor of CARECEN’s former Executive Director Saul Solórzano, this award celebrates his deep commitment to justice and immigrant communities. Steptoe carries that spirit forward through its work to expand access to justice, strengthening support for immigrant families, and helping launch Families United DC Metro, https://familiesuniteddcmetro.org/

Thank you to the Steptoe team for joining us, and, more importantly, for being part of the work that continues beyond that evening.

Thank you to Councilmember Brianne Nadeau for bringing together staffers and community organizations to discuss the potential termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and what it could mean for families across the District. Thank you as well to Aparna Raj for being part of this important conversation and our fellow DC Values Coalition partners, including Ayuda and Center for their continued advocacy.

The conversation reinforced what we are seeing on the ground. Families are experiencing significant fear and uncertainty about their employment, healthcare, identification documents, and future in the District. Employers and workers alike are struggling to understand the implications of expiring work authorization documents, and some TPS holders have already lost their jobs. At the same time, immigration detention has increased dramatically nationwide, making it more difficult for individuals to secure release from detention or navigate immigration proceedings.

Approximately 3,000 holders live in DC, contributing an estimated $110 million annually to the local economy, while more than 30,000 across the DMV generate nearly $1 billion in economic activity each year.

As the future of TPS remains uncertain, we urge local leaders to take meaningful steps to support longtime DC residents, families, workers, businesses, and communities during this period of uncertainty and help mitigate the harm caused by federal inaction on Salvadoran TPS.
