What can dolphin teeth tell us about their health? This summer, Hollings scholar Hannah Baker spent her internship in Charleston, South Carolina. She studied Tamanend's bottlenose dolphin teeth as a biomarker of freshwater exposure, which can harm dolphin skin and cause other health issues. To track this, Hannah analyzed teeth to measure barium levels, since barium is a chemical naturally found in freshwater. 🌊 It’s the last Monday in August, but NCEI still has one more amazing resource to share. NOAA Ocean Exploration developed a website for educators, students and anyone interested in ocean exploration. Not only can educators find access to classroom materials, the website explores topics such as bioluminescence, deep-sea corals, seafloor mapping and more.
