Building communities where our babies, elders, families are safe is a top priority.

That starts with resources, which is why I am so proud to present over $1 million in federal Community Project Funding to the City of Oakland’s Department of Violence Prevention for Operation Ceasefire, an evidence-based deterrence program with proven results.

This federal funding will help Oakland’s DVP deliver violence interruption and transformative social services for individuals who are at the highest risk for gun violence. When we work together with care and intention, we CAN reduce violent crime and recidivism, and create safer communities.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, I am thinking of those fighting silent battles in every corner of this nation.

If you are struggling, help is available 24/7 at the 988 crisis helpline. I am working every day to expand affordable and accessible mental healthcare for our neighbors in CA-12 and across the country, no one is in this fight alone.

To close out AANHPI Heritage Month, I joined and community leaders to celebrate a new affordable housing development project and Asian American culture in the East Bay.

We broke ground on a new building in West Oakland that will serve as both housing and commercial space, AND shopped around the night market. Shopping small and building affordable housing in West Oakland helps to support, celebrate, and build on the legacy of incredible Asian American culture in CA-12.

Thank you to everyone who came out to my town hall with and shared your concerns and priorities. Your voices and stories are the very center and focus of my work here and in Washington.

As we fight attacks on our democracy and civil rights, I will never stop fighting for our neighbors. Keep an eye out for future town halls in cities across the district, more information in the months to come!

I know personally that government policies and programs are not abstract – they determine whether families survive or fall through the cracks.

That is why I am leading on the newly formed Oversight Task Force on Defending Constitutional Rights and Exposing Institutional Abuses. Thank you for this opportunity, I look forward to using this position to push back against attacks on our civil rights, defend the public institutions and programs that serve our communities, and fight for a government that works for all people.

This week I toured a job site with LiUNA Laborers Local 304 to see first hand how LiUNA works with developers for the benefit of their members and the community here in CA-12.

I will continue to advocate for the needs and demands of workers at the policy making table and fight to advance policies that put workers FIRST.

This month we lost three more lives to gun violence at the Islamic Center of San Diego - Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad.

In the wake of their deaths, I cosponsored legislation honoring their lives and memories. I will remain consistent in my advocacy and votes for common sense gun control. We need to be doing more — our communities, babies, elders deserve real solutions and swift action.

I’ve been working hard in Washington over the past few weeks to fight back against the Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress as they carry out an illegal war in Iran, disenfranchise Black voters, and strip resources from care workers. Take a look at what I’ve been up to in Congress to fight back and carry our values forward.
