For Kenya, ending homelessness was just one part of building a new life.

A Sisters Rise client, Kenya found a special community at Calvary Women's Services, where she received the support and encouragement to move toward independence and begin looking ahead to her future.

As we close out Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're proud to share Kenya's story and the progress she's made.

In a city we all call home, far too many women are navigating homelessness, housing insecurity, and the lasting effects of domestic violence.

Housing is a human right, and every woman deserves a place to call home.

This month, we’ve recognized the women whose journeys toward safety and independence are made even more difficult by housing insecurity and homelessness.

At Calvary Women’s Services, we know that ending homelessness requires more than providing housing. Through our comprehensive housing, health, education, and employment programs, women have access to the resources and opportunities they need to transform their lives.

With the holidays approaching, we’re entering a season that reminds us of the importance of home, community, and generosity.

This season of giving, be the reason another woman in Washington, DC, has the opportunity to build a safe, stable, and independent life.

Leaving an abusive relationship is about much more than walking out the door. Many women have to face hard questions, and the answers can determine whether they find safety and stable housing or end up homeless.

At Calvary Women's Services, we understand that leaving an abusive relationship is only the beginning. Rebuilding a life requires safety, stability, and access to the resources and opportunities that make independence possible.

As Domestic Violence Awareness Month comes to a close, will you stand with women as they find answers to these difficult questions?

💜 $100 can ensure each woman walks into a new room at Calvary to find a fully made bed with new linens and a comforter.
💜 $150 can provide access to an on-site therapist as a woman begins her journey toward healing.
💜 $750 can provide a woman with comprehensive employment support.

Your generosity makes it possible for women to access the resources and support they need to build safe, stable, and independent lives. Make a gift today: https://pro.gofundme.com/give/517188 #!/donation/checkout

Why should you care about homelessness in Washington, DC? Because the strength of our community depends on the well-being of the people who call it home.

When women in our community are experiencing homelessness, they face challenges that extend far beyond not having a place to sleep. Without stable housing, it becomes more difficult to maintain employment, prioritize physical and mental health, and build financial independence. These are challenges that affect not only the women experiencing them, but also the families, workplaces, and communities around them.

As we recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it’s also important to understand that domestic violence is one of the circumstances that can contribute to homelessness. For some women, leaving an abusive relationship means losing the only stable housing they have.

In this video, Calvary client Sarai shares her experience with homelessness. We encourage you to watch her story and consider the role we can all play in creating a community where every woman has the opportunity to thrive.

A special thank you to our wonderful volunteer videographers, Eunice (E) and Lois Shin, for working with Sarai to share her story! We were so happy to see them again at our Community Walk & Fun Run earlier this month. We’re incredibly grateful for their unwavering support and the many ways they continue to contribute their time and talents to Calvary Women’s Services.

Today is Purple Thursday, a day dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence!

Our team is wearing purple today to show our support for survivors of domestic violence and stand alongside the women in our community who are working to rebuild their lives.

You can stand with survivors by making a gift. Consider a $150 gift, which can provide therapy services for one woman in Calvary's programs. Therapy is essential for women who have experienced trauma, helping them heal and prepare to take important steps toward ending their homelessness: https://www.classy.org/give/517188 #!/donation/checkout

It's heartbreaking to think about how many women in Washington, DC, have experienced domestic violence, including those whose experiences may never be reported.

This statistic, highlighted by the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, is a powerful reminder of how deeply domestic violence affects women in our community.

Calvary Women's Services is an active member of the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, a federally recognized statewide coalition of domestic violence programs, organizations, and individuals working toward the elimination of domestic violence in the District of Columbia.

Through this coalition, Calvary has had opportunities to advocate for policies that safeguard women across the DMV region and the nation.

Today is Purple Thursday! We encourage you to wear purple to show your support for survivors and help raise awareness about domestic violence. You can also make a gift to Calvary's housing, health, employment, and education programs, which provide women who have experienced domestic violence with the resources and support they need to rebuild their lives.

Recently, we welcomed a very special guest for an ice cream social celebrating National Recovery Month!

Warm, vibrant, and full of life, Betty first came to Calvary more than a decade ago after experiencing homelessness. Since leaving our programs, she has continued to inspire others, including sharing her story at the Hope Gala and recently speaking at our Community Walk & Fun Run. We were delighted to reconnect with her following her crowning as Ms. Senior DC America 2026.

During her visit, Betty reminded the women in our programs that their current circumstances do not define them. She shared words of encouragement and well wishes as they work toward their next chapters.
