It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles of the Visalia Area.

On September 28, 2026, at approximately 5:11 p.m., CHP Motorcycle Officer Liles was involved in an on-duty traffic crash on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in Tipton. He sustained critical injuries and, despite lifesaving efforts, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Officer Liles, 44, served the people of California for more than 16 years. After graduating from the CHP Academy in 2010, he was assigned to the San Jose Area and later served in the Hayward and Fresno Areas before transferring to the Visalia Area in 2019.

Officer Liles is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and two sisters.

The CHP extends its deepest condolences to Officer Liles’ family, friends, loved ones, and all who served alongside him. His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.

👏 Congratulations, Officer Becerra! 👏

Recently, Officer Becerra was recognized for his outstanding service to the community by American Legion Post 826 as part of their annual Law and Order Awards.

Each year, the American Legion invites us to nominate an officer who exemplifies dedication, professionalism, and a commitment to serving our communities. Officer Becerra embodies those qualities through his service both on and off the roadway.

Over the past year, his proactive enforcement efforts have included numerous DUI arrests, helping remove impaired drivers from our roadways and contributing to safer communities. His dedication and productivity have also earned multiple departmental commendations, including recognition for the highest number of DUI arrests in a quarter.

Additionally, Officer Becerra brought more than a decade of experience as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to CHP West Valley. In addition to his patrol duties, he serves as a medical instructor for the department, sharing his knowledge and lifesaving expertise with fellow CHP personnel.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Becerra on this well-deserved recognition!

On September 11, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and honor the courage of the first responders who ran toward danger to help others.

We remember the sacrifices made that day and the lasting impact on our nation.

Today, we pause to remember.

Honoring Life-Saving Actions

On February 20, 2026, Officers Torres and Ontiveros were on patrol in unincorporated Los Angeles County when they encountered a serious traffic crash involving a pedestrian trapped beneath a pickup truck in a crosswalk.

The officers immediately came to the pedestrian’s aid. With assistance from a Good Samaritan, they lifted and pushed the pickup truck off the pedestrian.

The pedestrian quickly became unresponsive, and when Officer Torres could no longer detect a pulse, he immediately began CPR, with Officer Ontiveros assisting.

Officer Torres continued CPR until a steady pulse was restored and the pedestrian regained responsiveness. The officers then transferred care to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Through their quick decision-making, teamwork, and immediate application of life-saving medical aid, Officers Torres and Ontiveros helped save a life. The pedestrian went on to make a full recovery.

Officers Torres and Ontiveros were recently recognized with the Life-Saving Medical Aid Award for their extraordinary efforts and dedication to serving our community.

Please join us in congratulating Officers Torres and Ontiveros for their outstanding work.

🚨More than meets the eye…🚨

This Transformers inspired “Barricade” vehicle was stopped by one of the West Valley Area’s new limited Chevrolet Camaro patrol vehicles after officers observed unauthorized forward-facing red lights.

While movie-inspired vehicle builds may turn heads, California law prohibits lighting and markings that could cause the public to mistake a vehicle for an official emergency vehicle. Help us keep our roadways safe by leaving the red lights to authorized emergency responders.

The driver was cited for:
🚔 CVC §25950(a) – Displaying unauthorized forward-facing red lights.
🚔 CVC §27605(a) – Operating a vehicle painted to resemble one used by a peace officer.

Yesterday, CHP Assistant Commissioner, Field Rodney Ellison visited the CHP West Valley Area to honor Officer Van Dyk as a 2025 Top Performer. Through his dedicated enforcement efforts, Officer Van Dyk issued 520 distracted driving citations in 2025, helping keep our roadways safer for everyone.

Distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of preventable crashes. We are proud to recognize Officer Van Dyk’s commitment to enforcement, education, and public safety.

Congratulations on this well deserved recognition and thank you for your continued service to the communities we serve.
