Earlier today, June 20, 2026, the Brgy. Opao Barangay Hall became a hub of learning, collaboration, and empowerment for the activity entitled "ECO PRIDE: CAPACITY BUILDING OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS AND BASICS ON STIs AND HIV 101."

This unique initiative was conceptualized by the Community Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Committee of the Butuanon River Watershed Water Quality Management Area (WQMA) in partnership with One Pride Mandaue, headed by its Federation President, Wainer Ouano. This milestone is a proud realization of the Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) component of the WQMA 10-Year Action Planโ€”bringing environmental policy straight to the grassroots level. By uniting environmental stewards and community leaders, we are fostering an inclusive space where public health and environmental care go hand in hand.

The program was graced by esteemed leaders who set an inspiring tone for the day.

Hon. Jennifer del Mar, Mandaue City Councilor, opened the event with an empowering message, emphasizing the critical role of local communities in environmental and health advocacy.

Atty. John Edward T. Ang, Regional Director, Environmental Management Bureau 7, delivered a compelling message reinforcing the agency's commitment to localized environmental governance and community empowerment.

Participants engaged in deeply informative technical sessions designed to equip them with actionable knowledge including, An Overview of Republic Act No. 9275 (Philippine Clean Water Act) and the Butuanon River Watershed-WQMA, Overview of Republic Act No. 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act) and Basics on STIs and HIV 101.

We extend our deepest gratitude to One Pride Mandaue, the CEPA Committee of the BRW WQMA, and our exceptional resource speakers. Together, we are building a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Mandaue and a more inclusive Central Visayas.

CEBU CITY, June 18, 2026 โ€“ The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 7 (DENR-7) officially launched โ€œBahandi sa Kinaiyahan: Kinabuhi, Kabilin, ug Kalikupan,โ€ a Biodiversity and Protected Area Exhibit that showcases the rich natural heritage, diverse ecosystems, and protected landscapes and seascapes of Cebu and Bohol.

Held at SM City Cebu, the four-day exhibit runs from June 18 to 21, 2026, featuring the 22 Protected Areas of Cebu and Bohol and highlighting the importance of biodiversity conservation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.

Anchored on the theme โ€œPag-ila, Pag-amuma, ug Pagpanalipod sa mga Bahandi sa Kinaiyahan sa SugBohol,โ€ the exhibit aims to deepen public appreciation of the regionโ€™s ecological treasures and inspire collective action in protecting the environment.

The opening program was attended by key regional leaders, including Cebu Provincial Administrator Secretary Ace Durano, NRDC Executive Vice President Joel Erestain, DOT-7 Regional Director Gelena Dimpas, and Cebu City Chief of Staff Kenneth Siasar. They joined officials from DENR-7, representatives from partner agencies, local government units, environmental advocates, and students who gathered to celebrate the regionโ€™s biodiversity and conservation milestones.

Through captivating visual displays, educational materials, interactive exhibits, and stunning photographs of protected areas, visitors are given an opportunity to explore the unique ecosystems that support countless species of plants and animals, many of which are found only in the Philippines.

Regional Executive Director Laudemir S. Salac emphasized that biodiversity is not merely an environmental concern but a foundation of life, culture, and sustainable communities.

โ€œEvery protected area tells a story of life, resilience, and stewardship. Through this exhibit, we hope to strengthen public awareness that conserving biodiversity is not solely the responsibility of government agenciesโ€”it is a shared responsibility of every Filipino,โ€ Salac said.

The exhibit highlights the ecological significance of forests, wetlands, mangrove areas, marine protected zones, watersheds, caves, and other critical habitats found across Cebu and Bohol. It also showcases ongoing conservation initiatives undertaken by DENR and its partners to protect threatened species, restore degraded ecosystems, and strengthen community participation in environmental protection.

More than an educational showcase, Bahandi sa Kinaiyahan serves as a platform for connecting people with nature and fostering a deeper understanding of how biodiversity contributes to food security, climate resilience, water resources, tourism, and local livelihoods.

Complementing the exhibit is the DENR Express on Wheels, which brings selected frontline services directly to the public. The mobile service center offers information and assistance on land, forestry, wildlife, environmental compliance, mining, and biodiversity-related concerns, reflecting DENRโ€™s commitment to making government services more accessible and responsive.

As visitors journey through the exhibit, they are encouraged not only to admire the beauty of nature but also to become active partners in its protection. By showcasing the invaluable natural treasures of Cebu and Bohol, DENR-7 hopes to cultivate a stronger culture of environmental responsibility and inspire future generations to safeguard the countryโ€™s biodiversity.

The exhibit stands as a testament to DENR-7โ€™s continuing commitment to environmental education, biodiversity conservation, and the protection of the nationโ€™s natural heritageโ€”ensuring that these precious treasures remain a source of life, pride, and inspiration for generations to come.

Earlier this morning, June 18, 2026, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region 7 officially turned over the leadership and management of the Southern Negros Geothermal Airshed (SNGA) Governing Board to the newly established EMB Negros Island Region (NIR).

Held at the Hotel Essencia in Dumaguete City, this significant transition marks a localized, more focused approach to monitoring and protecting the ambient air quality surrounding the vital geothermal operations of the Energy Development Corporation (EDC).

The ceremonial turnover was spearheaded by the outgoing Chairperson of the SNGA Governing Board, Atty. John Edward T. Ang. of EMB Region 7 and by Engr. Cristina Ruth Desuyo (OIC-EMED Chief), representing EMB NIR, on behalf of OIC Regional Director For. Vicente S. Losbaรฑes.

In a powerful and moving turnover address, EMB Region 7 Regional Director Atty. John Edward T. Ang reminded everyone of the true essence of the airshed's establishment.

"Let us remember why we are here in the first place. DENR Administrative Order No. 2004-14 did not simply draw a line on a map and call it an airshed. It made a declaration: that the air above Southern Negros โ€” shared by communities, by industry, by the land and the people who depend on it โ€” is a common resource that no single agency, no single company, and no single community can protect alone."

Addressing the new leadership, Atty. Ang added: "We hand this over not as a burden, but as a trust. The relationships we have built, the systems we have established, and above all, the members of this Board, are now yours to lead. Yet they remain, as they always have been, partners to be engaged rather than subjects to be managed. I have every confidence that under your stewardship, this Board will not merely continue, but will grow stronger."

He closed with a stirring charge to all the newly designated Governing Board Members present:

"Let this transition change the letterhead, but not the commitment. Continue to show up. Continue to hold each other accountable. Continue to remember that the air we are protecting does not recognize regional boundaries โ€” it only recognizes whether we, together, did our part."

The event was warmly attended by these very board members from across the NIR, representing various local government units, partner agencies, and stakeholders who are ready to take on this mantle of shared environmental stewardship.
