JUST NOW | The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Surigao del Norte, in partnership with the Metals and Engineering Innovation Center Caraga (MEIC) Caraga, successfully conducted a two-day training program aimed at strengthening smart manufacturing capabilities.

Implemented under DOST’s SETUP, the technology training brought together participants from Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), beneficiaries of the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), and faculty members from Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU).

The two-day training combined theoretical instruction with practical, hands-on sessions. Dr. Renee C. Tan of MEIC Caraga led the lectures, while Engr. Jovan O. Agbu conducted demonstrations and guided participants in the operation of key equipment such as hydraulic press brakes and plasma cutters. The activity strengthened participants’ core competencies in layout design, metal cutting, and machine operation.

Under the leadership of Dr. Vrian Jay V. Ylaya, MEIC Director, MEIC Caraga continues to advance technical capacity, research, and innovation in the metals and engineering sector through its programs and services. As an emerging hub for research, prototyping, and technology development, it plays a key role in driving capacity building and industry advancement across Caraga. The initiative is funded by the DOST - Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) and implemented by the DOST - Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC), in collaboration with DOST Caraga and SNSU.
