🍂🇵🇹 Today is All Saints’ Day (Dia de Todos os Santos), a national public holiday in Portugal.

The day is traditionally marked by family gatherings, visits to cemeteries and the custom of Pão por Deus, where children receive sweets and treats from neighbours.

Many believe this tradition grew after the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake, which struck on All Saints’ Day, when communities came together to share food and support those affected.

Last week was a busy one for UK-Portugal relations in London, with visits from Portugal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Environment and Energy, and Minister for State Reform.

Across a series of meetings with UK counterparts, discussions focused on a wide range of shared priorities, including foreign policy, security, energy, digital transformation and public sector innovation.

The breadth of topics on the agenda reflects the close cooperation between the UK and Portugal and the many areas in which our countries work together. From tackling today’s security challenges to building more resilient energy systems and modern public services, both countries share a strong interest in practical, forward-looking collaboration.

These visits also highlighted the continued importance of the UK-Portugal partnership at a time of growing cooperation across Europe and beyond.

Travelling to Portugal with children age 17 and under with a person who is not their parent or legal guardian, then remember you must:

👉 Carry a letter of authorisation to travel from their parent or guardian. The parent/guardian’s signature must be certified by a solicitor or notary, and legalised.

⏰ Clocks Go Back Tonight

A reminder that clocks go back by one hour overnight on Sunday, 25 October.

At 02:00, clocks should be turned back to 01:00, marking the end of daylight saving time.

Please remember to update any clocks, watches and other devices that do not adjust automatically.

✅ Enjoy an extra hour in bed and plan ahead if travelling early on Sunday morning.

📘 Has you British passport been lost, stolen, damaged or expired while in Portugal?

To travel you will need to apply for an Emergency Travel Document (ETD). This currently costs £125 and can take at least two working days to be issued.

Once it's ready you can choose to:

📍 Collect it from the British Embassy in Lisbon or the British Vice Consulate in Portimão
🚚 Have it securely couriered directly to your address in Portugal

✅ Remember to keep your passport safe and consider storing a photo or copy separately from the original.

Portugal’s women take on Northern Ireland today, Tuesday 13 October at 19:15 local time, at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão, in the second leg of their FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying play-off .

🇵🇹 Portugal head into the match with a 4-0 advantage following the first leg in Northern Ireland.

School half-term dates vary across the UK, but many families will be travelling during October:

🏴 Scotland: Most schools break around 12-16 October (dates vary by local authority).

🏴 Northern Ireland: Many schools close for a short Halloween break around 29-30 October.

🏴 England & Wales: Most schools have half-term from 26-30 October, with many families travelling between 24 October and 1 November.

If you're planning to travel:

✅ Make sure you have appropriate travel insurance
✅ Allow extra time at airports and transport hubs
