A little chalk. A lot of heart. On Monday, TESSA staff came together for Chalk the Walk for Survivors, filling our sidewalks with colorful messages of encouragement, strength, and solidarity in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Each message was a small but meaningful reminder to survivors who walk through our doors: You are seen. You are believed. You are not alone. Thank you to our incredible staff for taking a moment to turn an ordinary sidewalk into a space filled with compassion and encouragement.

Instead of asking why someone stays, consider how we can make it easier and safer for survivors to seek support. Domestic violence is not limited to physical assault. It is generally understood as a pattern of actions, threats, or coercive behaviors used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Multiple forms of abuse often occur together, and some behaviors fit more than one category

If someone discloses abuse to you, you don't need to solve the situation for them. Listen. Believe them. Avoid judgment. Respect their choices. Survivors choose which systems and resources they want to engage with, and meaningful support centers their decisions rather than taking those decisions away.

Separation does not necessarily end a person's attempts to maintain power and control.
Abuse may change forms instead. Understanding post-separation abuse is another reason to avoid asking why a survivor hasn't “just left.” A survivor may be navigating risks that continue well beyond the relationship itself.

Last Monday, TESSA's CEO, Anne Markley, and Prevention and Outreach Program Manager, Susan Searle, visited the Pi Kappa Alpha at Colorado State to lead a conversation about consent and sexual assault.

We're grateful for the opportunity to engage with students, encourage meaningful dialogue, and help build a greater understanding of healthy relationships and personal accountability.

Faith and spirituality can be important sources of comfort, identity, and community, but they can also be manipulated within abusive relationships. When personal beliefs become a means of creating guilt, fear, or shame, it can be difficult to recognize where faith ends and control begins. Everyone deserves the freedom to explore and practice their beliefs without coercion or manipulation.

Cheers to community partners who give back! A huge thank you to Goat Patch Brewing Company for hosting a Bleating Heart Night benefiting TESSA! We're grateful to Goat Patch for bringing our community together in support of survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. Events like these are a wonderful reminder that supporting survivors can take many forms, including gathering with friends, enjoying a local favorite, and giving back to an important cause. Thank you to the Goat Patch team and everyone who stopped by, raised a glass, and helped make the evening meaningful.
