The Tennessee Highway Safety Office is a division of the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security advocating for traffic safety.

The Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) is Tennessee's advocate for traffic safety. THSO partners with law enforcement, judicial personnel and community advocates in efforts to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities. Through data-driven strategies, law enforcement, education and media communications, THSO works to improve human behavioral aspects of traffic safety.

Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for young pedestrians. National crash records show that children ages 4-8 are at 10 times higher risk of being hit by a driver on Halloween night compared to other evenings.

🎃 Adult supervision for children at all times.

🎃Always walk on sidewalks. Avoid the street whenever possible.

🎃Wear reflective clothing to stay visible to drivers.

🎃Only cross at designated crosswalks. Use caution and look both ways.

🎃Costumes should not hinder vision, hearing, or walking ability.

Nothing is scarier than a driver who isn’t even looking at the road. 📵☠️

Tennessee is a “hands-free” state. That means it is illegal for drivers to hold a cell phone or mobile device with any part of their body. Violation of this law can result in points on your driving record.

Today, the THSO brought the Seat Belt Convincer and educational materials to the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System's Annual Safety Fair in Murfreesboro to remind citizens that seat belts save lives.

The Tennessee Highway Safety Office announced $25 million in federal grant funds to be distributed statewide from NHTSA for the 2026–2027 federal fiscal year.

“The THSO is pleased to announce the allocation of federal grant funds to support our traffic safety partners across Tennessee,” said THSO Director Buddy Lewis. “These funds will be used to increase traffic safety education, public awareness, advocacy, training, and enforcement initiatives to improve driver behavior and protect Tennessee roadways.”

Yesterday, the THSO joined the Governors Highway Safety Association, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, and Nashville Department of Transportation & Multimodal Infrastructure for Amazon’s “Safety at Every Turn” event at the Nashville Predators game at Bridgestone Arena to promote pedestrian safety ahead of Halloween.
