Alongside Governor Cox, Commissioner Ferry, Great Salt Lake Commissioner Steed, and many valued partners, we had the privilege of celebrating recent Great Salt Lake achievements at todayβs roundtable discussion.
One major success story is the partnership between our Sovereign Lands and fire programs, using prescribed burns to remove invasive phragmites along the Great Salt Lake shoreline.
To date, the division has successfully treated 8,441 acres of this aggressive, water-intensive reed that threatens wetlands and critical shorebird habitat.
These efforts are already delivering meaningful results, including:
β’ An estimated 12,586 acre-feet of water savings once fully eradicated and restored to native vegetation
β’ Approximately $2.2 million in savings compared to mechanical treatment methods
This work highlights the power of collaboration and innovation in protecting the future of the Great Salt Lake.

In a drought year, heightened common sense IS fire sense. As of May 6th, 85% of the 125 fires in 2026 have been human caused.
In 2025 vehicles and equipment topped the list of human-caused wildfires.
Stay safe this summer!!
Don't park on dry grass.
Tighten your trailer chains to keep them from sparking against the asphalt.
And check your tire pressure and brakes before you hit the road.
Some people call it a hot girl walk π
π₯, we call it a pack test.
Every year, our firefighters complete the Work Capacity Test, also known as the "Pack Test". To maintain "Arduous" fitness certification, they must walk 3 miles in 45 minutes or less while wearing a 45-lb weight vest.
Why do we do this? Wildland firefighting is physically demanding. Whether itβs hiking up steep ridges or hauling gear through dense stands of trees, our crews need to be in peak condition before the first fire report of the season. This test ensures that every person on the line has the aerobic capacity and muscular endurance to stay safe and effective during long shifts in rugged terrain.
Crazy how things have changed over the past 30 years...
