Join us this Saturday, May 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Varner‑Hogg Plantation State Historic Site for an engaging “Page to the Stage” workshop led by Naomi Carrier, playwright, performer, author, and founder of the Texas Center for African American Living History.

This hands-on program is designed for museum educators, interpreters, reenactors, and historic site professionals who want to strengthen their skills in creating meaningful and historically grounded performances. Naomi will guide participants through the process of transforming primary and secondary sources into compelling scripts, building authentic characters, and presenting stories that connect with today’s cultural and heritage tourists.

Naomi brings decades of experience in living history theater, beginning with her acclaimed musical I Am Annie Mae, which is archived at the Smithsonian. Her extensive work with historic sites across Texas has helped shape how visitors experience the past. The workshop emphasizes that people, rather than artifacts or settings alone, bring history to life.

Honor Juneteenth, a Texas holiday, with a guided tour at the Varner-Hogg Plantation. This tour focuses on stories of the emancipation of black enslaved people in Brazoria County. Emancipation occurred for most individuals on January 1, 1863. However, those in Texas remained in bo***ge until Union Soldiers sailed to Galveston to enforce the new law that abolished slavery. The soldiers arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865. More than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were freed by executive decree.

Guided tours will be going on throughout the month of June. No reservation required. Tour is included with the cost of admission.
June 17 at 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm
June 20 at 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm
June 27 at 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm
