In Siskiyou County, public health nurses are helping people prevent diabetes, one class at a time.
With support from California’s Future of Public Health funding, eight local nurses and educators were trained to lead a six-week diabetes prevention program called DEEP™. It’s hands-on, easy to understand and free to the community.
Since launching in 2024, the program has reached more than 40 residents — many of them seniors — and helped clear up myths, build healthier habits and make diabetes prevention more accessible in this rural county.
“In a place like Siskiyou, where access to care is limited, programs like this are vital,” said Public Health Director Shelly Davis.
