- Siskiyou County Installs Wolf Awareness Signs in Areas of Known Wolf Activity -

Siskiyou County (the County) and the Public Works Department has recently installed wolf awareness signs along select county roads in areas where gray wolf activity has been documented.

The signs, which resemble traditional wildlife crossing signs, are intended to increase public awareness and help inform residents, visitors, outdoor recreationists, and motorists that wolves may be present in the surrounding area.

The signs do not indicate immediate danger or a road hazard. Rather, they serve as a reminder that wolves are known to inhabit or travel through the surrounding landscape.

"As wolf populations continue to expand throughout portions of Northern California, it is important that the public remains aware of wildlife activity in the areas they visit," said Board of Supervisor Jess Harris. "These signs are intended as an educational and awareness tool that helps promote public safety and situational awareness."

The County encourages residents and visitors to remain aware of their surroundings when recreating outdoors, hiking, camping, hunting, or working in these areas. While Siskiyou County residents are accustomed to living alongside a variety of wildlife, including predator species, it remains important to stay aware of your surroundings and practice safe outdoor habits when recreating, working, or traveling in these areas.

The County will continue to monitor wolf activity and work with local, state, and federal partners to provide information and resources to the public as appropriate.

For additional information regarding wolves in Siskiyou County, visit the California Department of Fish and Wildlife website (https://wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Mammals/Gray-Wolf).
