Koobara has grown into a strong and well‑respected community hub.

Welcoming thousands of little and big feet through our doors running, playing, performing, preserving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's culture and traditions since 1974. Established in 1974, Koobara Kindergarten is a not-for-profit community-controlled organisation based on Brisbane's northside. Our Kindergarten offers a range of services with a specific focus on early childhood education using a culturally-responsive and Indigenist approach. Koobara offers an Indigenous playgroup on Mondays, and a Community Afternoon Program (fortnightly Tuesdays).

Happy World Teachers’ Day from Koobara Kindy! 🖤💛❤️

Today we take a moment to celebrate and recognise the professionalism, care, love and dedication of our wonderful teachers:

We are so grateful for the knowledge, kindness and care you share with our jarjums each and every day. Thank you for creating a place where our children can learn, grow, feel a strong sense of belonging and be proud of who they are.

Today we also honour and recognise our first teachers and cultural knowledge holders. Our Elders who guide us, our Mums and Dads, Aunties and Uncles, families and community who continue to carry, protect and pass on cultural knowledge from one generation to the next. 🌿

At Koobara, knowledge, culture and learning are at the heart of what we do. It takes a whole community to nurture our jarjums, and we are grateful for every person who teaches, guides, encourages and walks alongside them.

To our beautiful Koobara teachers, families, Elders and community, thank you for the knowledge you share, the culture you keep strong, and the love you pour into our jarjums. 🖤💛❤️

🎃👻 Playgroup families!

We’re bringing the Halloween fun to playgroup tomorrow! Expect loads of cool sensory trays and messy play — it’s going to be a blast! 🧪🕷️

Jarjum are welcome to dress up in their favourite costumes if they’d like — superheroes, witches, pumpkins, all are welcome! Just don’t forget to pack some spare clothes… things might get a little messy! 🧼👕

Please be advised that the Kindergarten will be closed on Monday, 19 October due to a Pupil Free Day.

This day is designated for staff professional development and planning, and no children will attend the service.

Regular kindergarten sessions will resume on Tuesday, 20 October.

Renaming our Playgroup
Our Playgroup Story

At Koobara Kindy, our Kindy groups each have a special name of their own. Monday/Tuesday group are the Koalas and Thursday/Friday group are the Kookaburras.

For many years, our playgroup was simply known as the Koobara Playgroup. As our Kindy continued to grow and evolve, Jess our Community Relations and Wellbeing Worker, felt it was time for our playgroup to have its own special identity, just like our Kindy groups do. It had been a long time coming, and together the Admin Team began looking for a name that reflected our youngest jarjums while celebrating Aboriginal culture, language and storytelling.

Our playgroup was inspired by the children's book Where's My Minya Marlu?, written by Mia Speed, a young Wirangu woman from South Australia. The story introduces children to the words Minya Marlu, which means "little kangaroo" or "joey."

Just like a baby kangaroo stays close to family while learning and growing, our playgroup provides a safe and welcoming space where babies, toddlers and their families can play, connect and learn together.

The name Minya Marlu Playgroup represents: 🦘 Our youngest learners beginning their learning journey through:
🌿 Strong connections to family, culture and community
❤️ A nurturing environment where every jarjum is supported to grow and belong
🤝 Families building friendships and connections together

We are proud to share this special name with our community and look forward to welcoming all our little jarjum to Minya Marlu Playgroup.
