🇵🇪📷 Within the framework of Afro-Peruvian Month, the Embassy of Peru in Kenya is delighted to present “Adelina y Amador”, an exhibition of documentary photography by Jeannine Ferrand that pays tribute to the legacy of Amador Ballumbrosio, his wife Adelina and his family, recorded 46 years ago in the town of El Carmen, in Chincha.
🌍 After the abolition of slavery in 1854, the descendants of enslaved Africans in the viceroyalty of Peru settled in communities on the edge of the desert. Today Afro-Peruvians represents nearly 10 per cent of Peru’s population. Their culture, shaped through resilience and resistance in the face of oppression, has remained a powerful expression of identity, memory and community across generations.
🇵🇪 Artistic dances such as zapateo, iconic dishes like anticuchos, and musical instruments such as the cajón continue to reflect the enduring influence of Afro-Peruvian heritage on Peru’s national identity ✨.
📽️ The exhibition is featured alongside the video documentary “Es Amador” directed by Roberto Bonilla, that dives deeper into the life of Amador, his music, and his dancing legacy.
🗓️ 8th – 26th June 2026
