Bouncers at the Digital Border: How Google’s reCAPTCHA Overhaul Fractures the Free Internet – European Pirates 29/05/2026

"Prove that you are human."

For years, reCAPTCHA was just a harmless little internet ritual. Click a box. Identify a few traffic lights. Move on.

Now, Google's overhaul of reCAPTCHA is raising much bigger questions about AI-driven surveillance, privacy, device control, and the future of the open internet.

Critics warn the new system could disadvantage privacy-focused users while pushing the web deeper into corporate-controlled ecosystems.

The article explores what's changing and why it matters far beyond spam protection.

The European Pirates stand in solidarity with our observer member, the Hungarian Two-Tailed Dog Party (MKKP), following growing concerns around democratic freedoms and political pressure in Hungary.

Should Digital Safety Be A Matter of Design Or Left to Settings? – European Pirates 12/05/2026

A banking app blocks screenshots to protect sensitive data.
Social media platforms often leave privacy protection to user settings.

Both increasingly rely on AI.
So why does digital safety feel fundamentally different across systems?

Can security be built into systems at the design level rather than added after harm occurs?
Can AI evolve from reacting to threats… to anticipating misuse before it happens?
And if systems can verify identity, can they also learn to understand intent?

As debates around AI governance, digital freedom, age verification, and platform accountability continue to grow, these questions are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. They are also part of the broader conversations shaping the upcoming Think Twice Conference in Brussels.

About Us - Access Now 06/05/2026

In Solidarity With Access Now

European Pirates stand in solidarity with Access Now following the abrupt cancellation of RightsCon 2026, scheduled for 5–8 May 2026 in Lusaka, Zambia, and online.
We deeply recognize the immense effort, care, and dedication that went into preparing this global gathering over the past year. RightsCon has long been a vital space for advancing digital, human, and democratic rights through open dialogue and collective action.
The sudden and unexplained nature of this cancellation is deeply concerning. At a time when digital freedoms and human rights are under increasing pressure worldwide, spaces like RightsCon are more important than ever.
While questions remain, our commitment does not waver. European Pirates stand firmly with Access Now and the broader community working to defend human dignity, freedom of expression, transparency, inclusion, and fundamental rights for all.
Setbacks like this only reinforce the need for continued solidarity and cooperation. We remain committed to working together for an open, free, and rights-respecting digital future.

Questions and Perspectives shape Solutions

Artificial Intelligence is assuming a larger role across platforms, services, and institutions. This is not promotional language - it is the reality of the digital era we are living in.

As AI continues to evolve, governance is no longer a distant concern. It is becoming central to how societies function. We are moving toward a future where AI and governance are increasingly intertwined, where technology decisions are also decisions about democracy, public services, and fundamental rights.

This is exactly the space the Think Twice Conference 2026 aims to explore.
Organized by Pirate Parties International in association with the European Pirates, the conference will take place in Brussels on 16–17 October 2026 and will focus on:
AI & Governance: Opportunities and Risks for Digital Freedom

We are now inviting speakers from across disciplines - policy, technology, research, civil society, and beyond.

As a speaker, you will:
Contribute to discussions on AI and democratic governance
Engage with policymakers, experts, and practitioners
Help shape how Europe responds to the opportunities and risks of AI

📅 Call for Speakers Deadline: 1 June 2026
📍 Brussels, Belgium

If you have a perspective, a question, or a challenge worth bringing into the conversation, this is the platform.
Because at its core, meaningful progress does not come from answers alone.
Questions and Perspectives shape Solutions.

The Digital Networks Act: A New Blueprint for Europe or a Threat to the Open Internet? – European Pirates 23/04/2026

The Digital Networks Act (DNA) is the European Union’s latest attempt to reshape its telecommunications sector. As part of the Digital Decade agenda, it aims to expand gigabit connectivity and 5G access across Europe while strengthening digital sovereignty.

Beyond infrastructure, the DNA also reflects Europe’s effort to position its telecom industry in an increasingly competitive global market.
But as the proposal takes shape, it raises important questions—about market fairness, net neutrality, and the long-term impact on the open internet.

What could this mean for consumers, smaller players, and the future of digital access in Europe?

Read more here to take a closer look at the potential risks and trade-offs behind the proposal:
