Minister of Defence: Yuriko Backes Yuriko Backes is the current Minster of Defence.

The Directorate of Defence coordinates and implements Luxembourg's defence policy. The Directorate of Defence is part of the Ministery of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Cooperation and Foreign Trade. In Luxembourg, Defence contributes to national and international peace and stability efforts within the framework of a coherent governmental external action, combining diplomacy, development cooperation and defence - the so-called '3D approach'. Luxembourg is a founding member of most of the major international institutions, e.g. the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union (EU) or the United Nations (UN). Within the framework of missions of those multilateral institutions, Luxembourg Defence, through its Army, participates in international operations aimed at maintaining peace or preventing the emergence of conflicts. The Directorate of Defence defines the regulatory framework and supervises the Luxembourg Army's foreign operational commitments from a political and military standpoint. The Directorate of Defence is also responsible for developing military capabilities and assets, and identifying the investments required to diversify Luxembourg's defence effort. At a national level, the Directorate of Defence, exercising oversight authority of the armed forces, is responsible for the army's legislative, regulatory and budgetary management. It is therefore also responsible for recruiting young people wishing to enlist as volunteer soldiers in the Luxembourg army.

Last week, Minister Yuriko Backes visited Uplift360, an innovative Luxembourg based company transforming how advanced materials are managed at the end of their lifecycle. Rather than seeing used high-performance materials as waste, Uplift360 has developed processes that recover and regenerate valuable materials that are also used in the defence sector, such as carbon fibre or synthetic aramid fibres like Kevlar.

The visit provided an opportunity to learn more about the company's work in advancing the circular economy, reducing waste and strengthening supply chains through the reuse of critical materials. By giving these materials a second life, Uplift360 is contributing to both environmental sustainability and industrial resilience.

🇫🇷 Nouveau DAP d’agent polyvalent de l’Armée – valoriser les compétences pour ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives
Le ministre de l’Éducation nationale, de l’Enfance et de la Jeunesse, Claude Meisch, et la ministre de la Défense, Yuriko Backes, ont présenté cette nouvelle formation professionnelle, lancée à la rentrée scolaire 2026/2027 à l’École de l’Armée, au Lycée technique d’Ettelbruck.
✅ L’objectif : valoriser les compétences acquises par les soldates et soldats volontaires au cours de leur service militaire et les faire reconnaître sous la forme d’une qualification adaptée aux exigences du marché du travail.
🎓 Perspectives tant dans le secteur public que dans le secteur privé

Luxembourg is hosting the 5th General Conference of the Incubation Forum for Circular Economy in European Defence IF CEED.

At the heart of Europe, Luxembourg has always been a natural place for encounter and exchange. We continue this legacy today, together with the IF CEED community, to build a defence ecosystem that is circular, resilient, and sovereign.

In September 2022, the very first IF CEED conference was held in the Grand Duchy.
This 5th conference marks the next step in our journey: scaling up solutions, deepening partnerships, and promoting the concepts of circularity and resilience for European defence.

We face a major challenge. The European Defence Agency is our indispensable partner – the bridge between private and public actors all across the EU. Our endeavors can only be met if our actions are aligned and if all Member States are onboard with a collective will to act.

Luxembourg stays committed. We are investing heavily in Research, Development and Technology. Circularity and Energy are core pillars of our Defence Industry Strategy. We launched new financial instruments to support startups, scale-ups and innovative companies active in the defence and dual-use sectors. This is our way forward. An approach providing a competitive advantage, strengthening the resilience of the armed forces and contributing to environmental protection. All at the same time.

Turning data into insight - Yuriko Backes together with Minister of the Economy Lex Delles visited Tadaweb at their headquarters in Esch-sur-Alzette.

The Luxembourg based company is developing a Software-as-a-Service platform turning publicly available information and open-source intelligence into actionable insights for cooperations, security & defence.

Operating in the fields of defence, national security, public safety, intelligence, cyber security and risk management, its technology enables analysts, investigators and intelligence professionals to collect, cross-reference, verify and analyse information from the web, social media, public records, the media and other open sources in order to produce targeted intelligence for decision-making.

Luxemburg und Österreich stärken ihre Zusammenarbeit im Bereich Verteidigung.

Anlässlich des Besuchs der Bundesministerin für Landesverteidigung Österreichs Klaudia Tanner in Luxemburg unterzeichneten Yuriko Backes und ihre Amtskollegin eine entsprechende Absichtserklärung. Schwerpunkte der Erklärung sind die vertiefte Kooperation in den Bereichen Weltraum, Cyber, Ausbildung von Militärpersonal, internationale Friedenseinsätze, sowie Sanitätswesen.

Die Ministerinnen besuchten SES und LuxGovSat, Joint-Venture des Luxemburger Staates und SES. Österreich wird sich am Programm GovSat-2, dem zweiten Kommunikationssatelliten von LuxGovSat, beteiligen.
